What is your biggest work-related disappointment and what did you learn from the experience?

My greatest work-related disappointment happened at the initial stage of the business operation of our company. During that period, I was responsible for undertaking a major project. Before undertaking this project, three other companies were competing against our company in endeavoring to win the tender in the final round of bidding for the project, one of which was a very famous company in China. This company later proposed to us that it would like to collaborate with us and submit a joint tender for the project and divide the profit equally between the two companies. I accepted the proposal and based my decision on the following considerations. First, as a newly-established company, our company had not been able to establish a well-acknowledged reputation within the business circle. Our cooperation with a major company like that could significantly increase our business opportunities. The cooperation was somewhat like the initial cooperation between Microsoft and IBM. In addition, the cooperation could definitely ensure the success in winning and accomplishing the project.

On account of the shortage of time, our company only signed a very simple Contract of Intended Cooperation in the initial stage of the cooperation between that company and our company. The contract failed to include many supplementary agreements that we reached orally. After obtaining the tender of the project, the two companies immediate embarked on the actual execution of the project. I had an implicit faith in the success of this cooperation, taking for granted the good reputation of my partner, the fact that their project manager was a graduate from the most prestigious university of China, and the sincerity that my partner displayed for cooperation. All I wanted was to carry out the project successfully.

After the completion of the project, my partner only acknowledged what was initially written in the contract. They refused to acknowledge the supplementary conditions and promises that were agreed upon between us orally. As a result, our company failed to obtain the profits that we deserved. This incident dealt a heavy blow to me, not only because it brought unanticipated losses to our company and required extra efforts on my part to solve the issue but also because it caused me to doubt my ability to make correct judgment. From this time on, seeds of suspicion were planted in my heart. I grew skeptical of others.

The event produced great harm on me. But it was caused by my credulity and lack of experience. As an act of remedy, at my strong insistence, our company engaged a lawyer as part-time legal advisor to ensure that all business activities of our company are carried out with legal guarantee. Another important lesson I learned from this incident is that I myself must be trustworthy and reliable when I cooperate with others, which will help to establish the reputation of our company. I believe that one can obtain considerable profits by breaking his or her promises, but that can happen just once. From a long-term perspective, only credibility and reputation can become the greatest assets of a company.
