Essay 1
Explain how obtaining an MBA at the McCombs School of Business will assist you in achieving your personal and/or professional life goals. Why is now the best time for you to pursue this degree? Your explanation should include, but is not necessarily limited to, a description of both your inter-mediate and long-term career goals, as well as a current vision of your desired employment upon graduation.
Immediately upon graduation from McCombs School of Business, I will seek a marketing manager position with a multinational company. During the next three to five years, I will focus on accumulating additional knowledge and experience in project management and financing. Within six years, I plan to have moved into the senior management of my company. Within ten years after earning my MBA degree from the McCombs School of Business, I am completely confident that I will have gained enough experience and knowledge, coupled with my educational training from your program, to start my own international trade and finance company.
After graduation from my university in 1995, I started to work as an assistant project manager in Poly Technologies, Inc., a large state-owned enterprise that ranked among the top thirty companies in China. Initially I only prepared shipping documents. This gave me practical knowledge of basic international business activities. After only six months, my quick learning capability and solid knowledge of the international business environment allowed me to be promoted to the position of Project Manager with the responsibility independently dealing with international trading. In this position, I learned an enormous amount of marketing knowledge, particularly in areas related to international business. For the first two years I focused on actually applying the knowledge of international trade and business that I had gained through my university studies while also learning some practical experience from my senior colleagues. In 1997, I was designated as the Poly Technologies, Inc. representative to the Union of Myanmar. During this period I led some project contracting bids, including a bridge building project and the building of a textile factory. This gave me a thorough knowledge of the project contracting process, including preparing project proposals and project management.
These experiences have helped me to understand international trade from a much broader perspective. Through meeting businessmen from outside of China, I have learned that the actual methods of conducting international trade are very different than my homeland. Chinese businessmen usually only understand part of the total process and little knowledge about finance and project management. I have found that in the rest of the world, people dealing in international business have a thorough knowledge of all aspects of international trading, which is usually necessary for conducting successful business deals.
To reach my intermediate and long-term career goals, I realize that I still need to gain an even broader understanding of international business. My past education and work experience have provided me with an excellent foundation, but I realize that an MBA degree will help me to build upon this knowledge to become a more complete businessman. The McCombs MBA program is one of the best business schools, with outstanding teachers and a multinational student body. With your program I will have the opportunity to learn the best problem solving skills while having a great chance to study with and learn from people from many different countries and varied backgrounds.
As China enters the World Trade Organization, there will be a huge increase in both inbound and outbound trade as well as an increase in big-name foreign companies located in China. There will therefore be an increased demand in my homeland for people with both international trading experience and a specified knowledge of finance and project management. Together with the knowledge and skills that I have gained from my experience in China and the southeast Asian markets, my MBA from the McCombs School of Business will give me the advantage that I need to reach both my short and long-term career goals.
