Discuss an experience that has had an impact on your development as a leader. (400 - word limit)

As a general manager, I made a controversial appointment that taught me an important lesson when dealing with employees of a company. A deputy manager of the production department named Huang Ming had caught my attention by making constructive proposals at our weekly management meetings. I found out that he regularly showed up late for work with little enthusiasm for his job. Further investigation revealed that he had been the manager of an important business department, but that he had been demoted due to problems with the former general manager.

I arranged a meeting with him to talk things over. He explained to me that he was not a "morning person" and that if he got up too early in the morning, he would be ineffective at work the entire day. He preferred to show up late so that he could work better and be in a better mood, even though it meant that his wages would be deducted. I explained to him several times that he should just try going to bed earlier, but he continued on his own way while also making great progress with the business.

Six months later, our company was opening a strategically important new shop. There were two candidates for the top position, Huang Ming and an experienced manager who was well-disciplined but not very innovative. After serious consideration, I decided to promote Huang Ming because I felt that Huang would rise to the occasion with such a challenging appointment. Unfortunately, my decision triggered a big dispute within the company, with many arguing against having such an undisciplined man run such an important shop. I felt tremendous pressure, because my reputation within the company was also at stake.

The results were startling. Although Huang continued to show up late, he often worked deep into the night. He imposed a very strict attendance policy for his employees, even deducting his own wages for being late. Within six months, his shop was the most profitable one in the entire company. I later put him in charge of all marketing channels, and he again quickly showed tremendous progress. When I decided to leave my job, he was the most suitable candidate to take over my general manager post. The changes in Wu over the two years' time were beyond the imagination of almost everyone else in the company. This experience taught me to look beyond a person's shortcomings to emphasize his or her positive aspects and allow them to develop to their utmost potential.
