Essay 1

Think about the decisions you have made in your life. Describe the following (Requirement: 2 pages max, double space - 1000 words)

PAST - what choices have you made that led you to your current position? PRESENT - Why is a Stern MBA necessary at this point in your life? FUTURE - How can a Stern MBA assist you in your career path? Short term and long term goals?

Two major decisions in my past have shaped my destiny so far in my life: the decision to come to the United States after my graduation from college, and the decision to start my own company in a foreign country. The first life-altering decision came in 1994, when China was still a relatively closed country. I felt that I needed to broaden my horizons and see what the outside world was like, while gaining a broader educational perspective at the same time. Although I had a good position as a scientific researcher when I made my decision, I didn't see any room for growth either in my career or as an individual. I decided that studying in America would give me the best chance to realize my dreams.

The second major decision seemed to be a natural extension of my first. After receiving my Master's degree in the U.S., I was fortunate enough to join a prestigious telecommunication firm that allowed me to mature substantially in my technical and communication skills. But once again I felt limited in my potential for growth inside a restrictive corporate bureaucracy and decided that I had two alternatives: join an established startup company or create my own company and therefore control my own destiny. Knowing that I had the technical skills and networking abilities, and realizing that there was a market for my services, I started a company with a few partners despite the risk that was involved.

I believe that a Stern MBA is necessary now because the world's business environment is already incredibly competitive and it is becoming even more so every day. My business is going strong after more than two years with clients from Alaska to Minnesota, but I realize that I have not reached my full capabilities as a businessman. Although I have a strong technical background and I have studied business knowledge on my own, several factors have made me realize I need a formal MBA education. Sometimes I feel that I have a difficult time communicating with business people when I have little formal business training. I need systematic training in business theories and case studies to combine with my technical expertise and current business knowledge to reach my full potential. In addition, my company's management team lacks a strong business background, which makes it difficult to convince venture capitalists to invest and further develop our business. Furthermore, the intense competition makes it necessary to understand our products and services not only from a technical point of view, but to also understand the different pricing and marketing strategies to meet customer's differing needs. Although I understand basic finance, I don't know enough to properly analyze our financial needs to raise substantial capital to expand my business. I have enough accounting knowledge to operate a business, but not enough to use the information to formulate financially intelligent decisions and business strategies. To summarize, I need the rigorous, methodological approach to studying these subjects that the Stern MBA program offers. Some of my clients have pursued degrees at NYU and speak highly of your programs. Your highly respected name and extensive global alumni network are additional benefits of the Stern MBA. Combining all of these factors with my technical background and business experience, there is no better time than now to pursue my MBA with your program.

For the future, as an immigrant entrepreneur in an Asian-American minority business, I realize that to succeed in a foreign country is an uphill battle and that there are a great deal of difficulties ahead of me. My Stern MBA will give me the knowledge that I need to overcome these difficulties and to more effectively manage a company on a global basis. Stern's diverse student body and faculty will provide me with a host of global perspectives and experiences. From my personal standpoint, this is very important to me as my company expands worldwide, with a subsidiary to open in China very soon. The complexities of doing business on a global scale are multiplied exponentially, and I will need every bit of business knowledge that I can get in order to succeed. The Stern MBA program offers me the best opportunity to gain that knowledge. As for my short-term goals, I plan to take full advantage of my opportunity to study in the Stern MBA program to reach my full academic potential. After graduation, I intend to apply that knowledge to streamline our company's business and to secure and gradually expand our existing customer base. To achieve this goal, we will need to expand the scope of our marketing and employ more flexible pricing structures. My long-term goals are to develop our software products based on our experience accumulated over time, which will require a significant investment. We could possibly accomplish this by saving money little by little, but it would be much more effective if we could gain venture capital investment. To get venture capital, we need to show a strong customer base as well as a management team has strong leadership skills and insightful business savvy, which is where my Stern MBA will help the most. Additionally, in the long term I want to expand our company's global presence and operate on a much larger scale. The trend is for companies to increasingly outsource their IT departments to foreign countries, and I plan to position our company to take advantage of this trend, particularly in China where we already have strong ties and a definite competitive advantage. In China, the business environment is very different than that of western countries and we are in the perfect position to take advantage of that fact because we know both the U.S. and Chinese markets very well. We have the technological and people skills, and my Stern MBA will provide my company with the final piece of the puzzle to move forward and reach our utmost potential.
