Discuss your career progression to date. Elaborating on your short-and long-term goals, how do you see your career progressing after you receive an MBA? Why do you want an MBA from Tuck? (500-1000 words)

I was fortunate enough to work for the Founder Company of Peking University in the treasury department at the time that it was one of the largest and most outstanding hi-tech companies China. Due to my desire to pursue an even higher goal, I left the company to pursue my own way of establishing my career. But this one year of financial working experience laid a solid foundation for my future career path. This experience taught me how to use all that I have learned from my university financial courses in my actual work. This led me to be able to set up a rational financial process during the early period of my own business, lessening the chance that controllable or uncontrollable financial variables would lead to the failure of the business. Additionally, the factors that had strengthened my decision to leave the company made me fully aware of that company’s integrity, team spirit, fairness, efficiency and the communication of ideas that I believe are the most essential elements to the success of a company. I have constantly tried to incorporate these elements into my own business and to find new ways to successfully deal with these problems. I have found that every member in my company feels proud to be a part of this group. Their passionate work is one of the most important factors contributing to our company’s continuing success.

We first began with a retailing business and we were able to accumulate some capital. Our first major business turn came when OSRAM, the largest electrical lighting producer in Germany, named us as their general sales agent for North China. Our complete, detailed business plan and the remarkable qualities of our staff contributed to OSRAM’s decision to cooperate with us. I was mainly responsible for marketing common lighting products and soon found distributors in every area of China. I made certain that I gave higher profit margins than the competitors for our distributors, which helped us to quickly build up our distribution network. The Chinese government also gave us an opportunity for a national lighting project, which we quickly seized.

The second major turn in our company’s development came due to the sober-minded judgment of our partners. Unlike most other private businesses in China, we are all college graduates. During the time that our sales were peaking, we sold our authorized distribution rights to a state owned enterprise for one million RMB. We had foreseen that there was not much room for more growth and as a group decided that we had to seek larger business with more development potential.

At about this time, China embarked on large-scale renovations of its major cities. Realizing that this was a golden opportunity for a new company, we set up a new engineering department and hired elite employees from the Tsinghua University Arts Department. With this company, I was in charge of market expansion and program development. We tried to exploit the best of each employee’s capabilities by forming smaller teams with members chosen from different departments on an ad hoc basis to meet the needs of various projects. One of our major victories was winning one third of the construction of the World Expo Garden against fierce competition from other famous large companies. With the successful completion of this project, our reputation in this field was firmly established.

The third major turn for our company happened in early 2001. Because of our company’s reputation, we were contacted by the Gehua Group, the largest state owned group dealing with business ranging from cultural performances to exhibitions and media. Gehua proposed to merge our company with the Gehua Engineering Company to enhance its profit earning ability. Because Gehua also had an excellent reputation in Beijing, we agreed to their proposal. Under the final agreement, we would initially hold a 49% share. Gehua would hold a 51% share at first but would give up a 3% share every year for ten years. Our company would be responsible for the new company’s operation and management. Thus far the arrangement has been very beneficial for both parties.

Our company has become successful my capitalizing on its opportunities by adapting and changing as the environment turns. My company may now be on the threshold of another major turn as I take a temporary leave of absence from the marketing department to earn my MBA abroad. With China’s entry into the World Trade Organization, the country has entered into a hyper-competitive business environment as global competition enters the marketplace. Only those companies that can adapt and change with the latest and best management methods to meet the competition can be expected to survive.

Personally, I am very interested in management science. My college major was in economics and I have studied many courses on enterprise management. Although I have had the benefit of years of business experience, these experiences have emphasized to me that I must have more knowledge in the field of management. I must learn as much as possible about business management and then apply this knowledge to my company. I believe that in the long term, companies must have managers that have a global outlook to be successful. Managers that have a good understanding of both themselves and the world as a whole will be best equipped to lead businesses in the future. Earning my MBA will give me this competitive edge and also enrich my personal life in the process.

My short-term goal is to master modern business management methods and apply them in my business by forming a stable operations team and a good management model. My long-term goal is to gain acute market insight, which comes from a combination of education and experience. As China becomes integrated with the rest of the world’s economies, I must become a manager that not only understands international business practices but China’s own economic development rules. With these tools, I can forge a proper management strategy to lead my company successfully into the future.
