Two major events of cross-cultural communication produced a critical shaping influence on my pursuit of an international education. During middle school, as lead singer and dancer, I traveled, together with the art troupe of my school, to six European countries on a performance tour, ending up in the China Art Festival at Rotterdam (Holland) and a reception by its mayor. In my high school, I attended an 8-week summer school at Stanford University where I was most fascinated by the discussion-based classroom activities. I had ample opportunities to experience American education—student-oriented teaching, free and democratic discussions, application of knowledge to practical issues, collaborative group projects, leadership development and presentations. The summer school opened a totally new chapter of educational experience for me, broadening my perspectives and stimulating my scholastic potential.

Of those two events, the first made me aware that, with my unique talents and cultural backgrounds, I have much to contribute to cultural diversity of any international community. The second helped me realize how one’s passion for academic excellence could be aroused and made possible. Apart from improving my skills in English reading and writing, I obtained impressive grades for 3 courses I took, proving my ability to achieve excellence in an all-English academic environment and to interact with outstanding faculty and students from around the world. I was simply intrigued by the charm of American education and, upon completing my high school, I succeeded in entering Dyson College of Arts and Science, Pace University. My distinguished background and credentials won me full scholarship.

In my current undergraduate program, I major in psychology. I have compelling reasons for studying psychology and pursing a psychology career. The birth of my younger sister 8 years ago was a life-changing event for me. On returning home from school everyday, instead of playing with friends in the neighborhood, I would help my mom take care of my younger sister who suffers from severe autism. As she loves to listen to music, I would play the piano for an hour or two and she would be so happy that she would dance and sing, temporarily coming out of her world of isolation. After that, I would bring her to the children’s playground at our community center. People found me keeping her company in such a loving and caring manner that they all mistook me for her mom.

In all those years, I’ve been searching for ways to bring my younger sister to a normal life. In the process, I have realized that human creatures are so vulnerable to psychological problems, innate or acquired. It is imperative that we intervene and help them recover. We need more and more psychologists ready to engage in cutting-edge research to understand the factors that give rise to people’s mental problems and to develop effective solutions to such problems. Even during my Summer School at Stanford, I had studied Applied Psychology and Cognitive Psychology. I believe that, by studying psychology, I can help people like my younger sister to tackle their mental challenges in this rapidly changing world.

At Pace University, I have been receiving systematic academic training in psychology. I have taken 4 courses in the first semester—Introduction to Psychology, Religion of the Globe, Math (the highest level for my major) and English Composition. During the winter vocation, I have self-studied the book Psychology of the East recommended by one of my teachers. I would have liked to choose more psychology courses to increase my knowledge in the field, but I am required to pass Introduction to Psychology as a prerequisite. Nevertheless, I have made amazing achievements in my studies—straight A’s in all the courses leading to a 4.0 GPA. This is a major achievement because as a Chinese student I have to cope with countless physical, cultural and academic challenges in a new environment. But my strong passion and motivation have empowered me to prevail. Each week, I would read 500 to 600 pages of all kinds of materials and take detailed notes in order to keep up with the pace of the instructions. For each lesson, I would arrive at the classroom half an hour earlier in order to get fully prepared. My industry has been duly recognized by my teachers, who love to take my questions and discuss them with me after class. Learning psychology has been a great pleasure to me and all my hard efforts have paid off—my ranking is among the top 3 in a class of approximately 40 students. In the forthcoming semester, I am qualified to take more of psychology courses and to build up my psychological knowledge.
