I believe that a further explanation of my relatively low GPA would be appropriate here. It is true that my GPA is low, but there is a medical reason that I was unable to perform better during this time in my life. Beginning in 1989, I began having problems with severe and debilitating migraine headaches. Because of the lack of medical personnel in the area, and the fact that my family had no money to send me anywhere else for treatment, my condition could not even be correctly diagnosed at the time, much less effectively treated. By the time that I left for university, my medical condition caused me to be unable to think or study for a prolonged period of time. I had no choice but to attend university while still afflicted with these debilitating migraines - I was lucky to be able to go to university at all, and if I missed this chance, it would be gone forever. Of course, being unable to study due to migraine headaches adversely affected my academic performance. In addition, physics is a difficult subject to study even assuming that you are in peak physical condition. There was a turning point, however, at my university I was able to undergo a thorough medical evaluation, and doctors finally determined that my migraines were caused by chronic rhinitis (deviation of the nasal septum), which required surgery. Due to the poor financial situation of my family, it was impossible for us to pay for the necessary treatment. My only alternative was to apply to the school authorities for public medical treatment, but due to too many applicants, I could not be treated until the end of 1992. Fortunately, the surgery was a success, and my academic record improved tremendously as I was now able to study like never before. Freedom from pain and devastating migraine attacks turned me into an entirely different person and a whole new university student. I made so much progress, that less than a year later in 1993, I was able to take part in the postgraduate economics specialty examination, where I ranked second out of 23 applicants despite the difficulties caused by my previous lengthy medical condition. It is my sincere hope that a low GPA will not automatically adversely affect my application.
