Recommendation Letter for Mr. Huang RL2

1. How long have you known the applicant and in what connection? Please commet on the frequency and context of your interaction.

I have known Mr. Huang Jiang for nearly 5 years. He was picked up by me and served as my subordinate in 1997, when I was general manager of the Management Department of a branch company of the HuangHe Company Group. I was his immediate boss from February to October in that year. Then as a suitable candidate, he was assigned to shake things up in our subsidiary in GuangDong Province, where managerial problems occurred. Mr. Huang was willing to go and gain practical experiences there. Later on he became the executive deputy manager-general of the company in GuangDong due to his brilliant performance in work and an all-round improvement of his managerial capability. I was transferred to another subsidiary of HuangHe in 1999, but I have kept contact with Mr. Huang all this time.

2. If applicable,briefly describe the applicant's role in your organization.

Mr. Huang was just an ordinary employee when he joined the HuangHe in 1997. But he became the backbone of his department in a short period of three months as a result of his ability in analysis and professional knowledge. 8 months later, he was sent to the subsidiary in GuangXi as central financial officer (the company's sales volume ranked third in all the 19 subsidiary companies in 1997). He went on to be manager of the Second Sales Business Department responsible for all the agent brands like HP, IBM, and TOSHIBA. He ends up the executive deputy manager-general in charge of all the departments and the daily business of the company.

3. What do you consider the applicant's talents or strengths?

I think Mr.Huang is adept in thinking and has superb capability of analysis and creation. He was responsible for the general analysis of the company's financial status in the fiscal year of 1996. He made full use of the merits of past analysis in his report. In addition, he adopted extraordinarily valuable standards of analysis. With the introduction of those standards, the president's office could have a better knowledge of the financial conditions of the subsidiary and the planning of the company's many policies were tremendously impacted by it as well.

Mr.Huang is also a man of great ideals, for which he is ready to work hard and take risks. If he had been in Beijing, he would have had a good and stable development in his career. But he offered to go to the GuangXi subsidiary in 1997 and to gain a first-hand and composite experience in a company weak in management. He has tempered himself in all the fields like financial affairs, sales and management and eventually became the general manager of the subsidiary capable of assuming all responsibilities independently.

4. What do you consider the applicant's weakness or development needs?

Although Mr.Huang has a rich accumulation of work experience, he is till lacking in that of globalization. China is now in the course of globalization and our company's chief product suppliers are internationally famous companies like IBM, HP, SUN, CISCO. Therefore, a manager must have good acquaintance with those companies' cultures and ways of operation. Moreover, he should be able to communicate with them well. I think that Mr.Huang needs to improve himself in those respects through study and experience. It is so essential to his professional progress that in a way it decides whether he can be the top leader of a large company in the future. I believe that with his good command of English and his ability to learn, he will soon catch up on this without any doubt.

5. In what development areas has the applicant changed most over time?

With the passage of time, Mr.Huang has made greatest gains in his comprehensive capability and professional experience. When I first met him, he was good at finance, logical analysis and standardized management. Now I think he has acquired the salient advantage of a well-rounded work experience. He has been deputy manager-general, manager-general and chairman of the directors of the reorganized company. He also underwent the experience from common worker to manager in the Head Company. While working in the professional department of TaiLin Digital, he cultivated his ability to expand business and do strategic planning. In a word, Mr.Huang has completed the transformation from a professional manager to a composite manager in five years of time.

6. What impact has this person had on the organization in which he works?

Mr.Huang animated the managerial department of the HuangHe's subsidiary during his work there, with his solid professional ground and innovative working style. Furthermore, he contributed a lot to raising the whole department's work efficiency and to stimulating its employees' enthusiasm in professional studies. Mr.Huang is a certified public accountant and in the months he was in the company, many workers enlisted in the exam for certified public accountants, which helps heighten the professional level of the department.

During his work in the GuangXi Subsidiary, he did a remarkable job in bettering the company's management. The company used to be one of the most chaotic subsidiaries in terms of administration. In just half a year after his arrival, all the work was being standardized. Later when he was promoted to the position of executive deputy manager-general, he helped ameliorate its management in the aspects of institutionalization and standardization. In the meantime, he organized training and conferences in that respect, with the consequence that the GuangXi subsidiary's employees improved their professional quality greatly.

7. What will this individual be doing in ten years? why?

I sincerely hope that Mr.Huang will realize his dream of working for MBA in America. He will turn out a very competitive and internationalized specialist after he finishes study and comes back to China. With his familiar acquaintance with China and the operations of its enterprises, and with his exceptional ability of learning and invention, I believe that he will play a significant role in the course of our country's integration with the world. I have no doubt that in ten years he will become a brilliant professional manager or even a young and promising entrepreneur if he has the chance. For he has got all the potentials for it with his knowledge, composite quality and perseverance, and with his drive for success and professional experience.

8. please give us your appraisal of the applicant in terms of the qualities listed below. Describe the reference group you are using.

The reference group is the employees of my company, the TaiLin Digital. It is a listed company in Hong Kong and deals with electronic business, large-scale application software development, network integration and the distribution of hi-tech IT products. It has 3600 employees and 80% of them have undergraduate or graduate education.

9. The Harvard business school is committed to developing outstanding leader who can inspire trust and confidence in others, please comment on the applicant's behavior (e.g. respect for others, honesty, integrity, accountability for personal behavior)within your organization and in the community.

We attach great importance to honesty of our employees in the HuangHe Group. In the selection of our leaders, especially leaders of subsidiaries, personal character is the essential quality to be considered. As subsidiaries are far away from the Head Company, and keep separate accounts, in the early development of HuangHe, some subsidiaries' managers-general's problematic personal character did damage the company tremendously. That is why we conduct a thorough examination of the candidates when we appoint subsidiaries' managers-general. Mr.Huang was examined in that way and his later performance has proved his honesty. I can give my word of honor that Mr.Huang is a man of honesty, respect and strong sense of responsibility.

Besides, Mr.Huang respects others and has the patience to communicate with them. When he was appointed manager-general in the LiuZhou subsidiary, some senior deputy general managers were bearing a grudge against him because they failed to be appointed as general managers. Hence, they did not cooperate well. Mr. Huang did not take any excessive action. On the contrary, he managed to communicate with them patiently. Consequently, in the first year of his tenure, none of the company's important employees left, which was rare in the shift of managers-general in the past.

10. Please feel free to comment on the ratings that you have assigned in number 8 and make additional statements about the applicant's record, potential, or personal qualities that you believe would be helpful to the admission Board in considering this person's application for the MBA program.

As to the reference group, I want to add that TaiLin Digital is one of the best companies in the Chinese IT industry, and the largest business in systematic integration and distribution. Its sales volume in 2001 is 150 million dollars. As far as Mr. Huang's personal ability is concerned, what I am going to say is that he is outstanding in analysis, learning and methodical thinking. Although he is not so good in oral expression as he is in other aspects, he is patient, clear-headed and not anxious for instant benefits. He gets along with people well because he is honest and can be trusted in cooperation of long standing. In the long run, a man of honor like Mr.Huang will accomplish enormously with the maturation of the market economy in China.
