1. When did you last have regular contact with the applicant?

As the applicant is currently working in our organizations, we have regular contacts on a weekly basis.

2. Describe the capacity in which you knew the applicant

As president of x x x Company, I got to know Miss Xxx in 20xx when she graduated from her university and was employed by our company. She has been working at the Department of XXX Management, in charge of wage and compensations management. As she has to report to me concerning many issues of wage and compensations management, we have developed a close working relationship and I have gained a good understanding about her. She is a very responsible and conscientious employee, with strong abilities and comprehensive skills. She familiarized herself with all the wage and compensation policies of our company and acquired adequate knowledge about each employee soon after joining our company. Within one year, she made remarkable progress and started assisting the department manager in employee recruitment.

3. Is the Applicant still with your organization? Yes/No, If no, when did he/she leave?

The applicant is still with our organization. In 20xx, due to her outstanding performance, she was transferred to the Department of XXXX Cooperation, a key business department of our company, where she has been engaged in the research, development and promotion of financial products, as well as the merging and acquisition of urban credit cooperatives and urban commercial banks.

4. Please detail any personal circumstances which might affect the applicant's performance on an intensive and demanding program.

I believe that Miss Xxx has no personal circumstances whatsoever that would pose any negative influence on her performance, however intensive and demanding the program might be. She is a very ambitious, well-planned and persevering person who would make all conceivable efforts to overcome difficulties and achieve her objectives. Her many years of work experience has helped her develop a mature psychology and the ability to put up with heavy pressure. Despite heavy pressure and tight schedule, she can always maintain her sound judgment and remain sober-minded, completing her tasks efficiently and with high quality.

5. Describe the applicant’s strengths and weaknesses

The applicant strengths are manifold. First, she has very good professional expertise. Even though she has worked at different divisions, she can always reach the highest level of excellence after necessary adjustments. As she keeps learning new things, she keeps improving her professional skills. Second, she has the strong ability to adapt to new environments. Work at the Department of XXX Cooperation is totally different in nature from that at the Department of XXX XXX Management, but Miss He succeeded in making necessary adjustments within the shortest time possible and starting to work productively in the new environment. Furthermore, she displayed strong organizational and coordination skills. She can make optimum use of all available resources, dividing labor properly among all the members, promoting intra-department cohesion and inter-departmental collaboration. Finally, she has strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. She can go right to the heart of the problem and come up with several sets of solutions to a problem, among which she would choose the best one according to the actual circumstances. Miss Xxx has her own weaknesses. In implementing specific projects, she tends to neglect some details as she is too focused on the broader picture. But she herself is well aware of this shortcoming so that, when carrying out any particular task, she would arrange a person to oversee the details to ensure that the task is fully executed.

6. Please comment on any task, project or other situation in which the applicant has been involved which may demonstrate his or her potential a manager or a responsible team member?

In 20xx, our bank started negotiations with XXX Bank about possible acquisition and restructuring. As our bank has relatively limited number of employees and branch offices, the acquisition and restructuring had important implications for our future development. As Miss Xxx had successful experience in a previous project (XXX Commercial Bank), our company appointed her as team leader in the project. Miss Xxx made a proper division of labor among the team members in accordance with their respective strengths (different members came from different departments). She required the members to formulate detailed schedules of the work they were individually responsible for and regularly report their work progress to her. On her own part, she was responsible for preparing the overall work plan. Under her leadership, members set to work in an orderly and efficient manner, with a sound communication and coordination mechanism. The team would have weekly meetings at which members reported on their work progress and the problems they faced. After summarizing members’ individual reports, Miss Xxx would report to the general manager, making close consultations with the manager regarding the key issues that were to be solved by the top management. The negotiations with XXX Bank proved very difficult because it had a number of potential investors and proposed very harsh conditions. Based on her detailed investigations of XXX’s financial conditions, market prospect, core competency and future strategies of development, as well as its business weaknesses, Miss Xxx convinced it of the advantages that our investment could bring to XXX Bank, as we had unparalleled strengths in the related business. Finally, a consensus was reached—30 million RMB. In addition, Miss Xxx secured the right for the company to set the debt-to-equity standards and got the minimum guarantee for the debt-to-equity prices. Miss Xxx’s leadership and the concerted efforts of the team members brought the project into a complete success, which was a key strategic move of our company of the year. Throughout the project, Miss Xxx demonstrated impressive potential as a distinguished administrator. Her expertise, flexibility and strong communication not only brought benefit to our company but also immensely expanded her personal value. I am fully convinced of her ability to fulfill her final career goal as a bank administrator in the not-too-distant future.

7. Please comment on the rankings you have given and on any other factors which you believe should be drawn to the attention of the British Embassy Selection Committee in assessing the suitability of this candidate for the British Chevening Scholarships Programme for China.

I have based my rankings of Miss Xxx on my overall impression of the 50 employees in our bank recruited in the same year as Miss Xxx was. By far, Miss Xxx is surely one of the most outstanding of them. She has novel ideas and has the courage to face challenges. After working at the Department of XXX Management for one year, Miss Xxx had the initiative to apply for transfer to a core business department of our bank. It was her belief that young professionals could achieve the most important growth by working at vital job positions in the company. I warned her that she would encounter major challenges but she insisted on making changes and try new possibilities. She added that her job at the key business department would bring her talents in finance into full play. The fact is that she has proved the soundness of her judgment. Over the past four years at the Department of XXX Cooperation, Miss Xxx has quickly grown into an outstanding operation manager, the backbone of the department. With her special contributions to our organizational growth, Miss Xxx has become one of the most valued employees of our company.
