Name of the Referee:

Organization:

Department of x x x, The University of x x x

How long have you known the applicant(years)?

I have known the applicant for xx years.

1. When did you last have regular contact with the applicant?

Miss X x x has been maintaining a regular contact with me since she graduated. She would like letters to me, have telephone conversations with me, or send me emails once in a while. We would meet for several times in a year.

2. Describe the capacity in which you knew the applicant

(注意:本栏意思是“请描述您是以何种职位或身份与申请人相识的?”capacity不是“能力”的意思,而是“职位、身份”意思)

I got to know Miss Xxx in 20xx when I taught her the course XXXXX during her undergraduate program. She liked to reflect on things and to play an active role in classroom discussions. After class, she had the habit of discussing with me those problems she did not quite understand and solicit my opinions on issues she cared about. In addition, she had the initiative to ask me to give her guidance on writing thesis. Out of her deep love for accounting, she launched an Accounting Salon in her class which had weekly workshops doing case analysis or inviting professors to give lectures. I attended some of those salons and was most delighted to share my views with the salon members.

3. Is the Applicant still with your organization? Yes / No, If no, when did he/she leave?

The applicant is no longer with our organization. She graduated from the University of xxxx in June 20xx and became employed by x xx.

4. Please detail any personal circumstances which might affect the applicant's performance on an intensive and demanding program.

I do not think that the applicant has any personal circumstances that might affect her performance on an intensive and demanding program. Miss Xxx is energetic and dynamic; she could handle any physical difficulties of studying in a different country. In addition, she has the full support of her family members who regard it a great honor for her to receive the sponsorship of Chevening Scholarships Programme for China which will give crucial promotion of her future career development. She has an indomitable spirit and is prepared to work tirelessly to do a great job in her proposed studies, however challenging they might be.

5. Describe the applicant’s strengths and weaknesses

Miss Xxx has a number of salient strengths, among which the most important quality is her strong intellectual curiosity. Eager to enrich her knowledge and keep herself well-informed of the latest developments in her field, she always did her best to have access to all the important publications in our department to become familiar with the accounting standards in both China and major western countries. She had a very rigorous academic attitude. Apart from acquiring knowledge in her specialty, she endeavored to be well-read in other fields as well so that she developed a quite broad ken of knowledge. Her second strength lies in her strong analytical skills. She was insightful and quick-witted, and she could apply sound judgment in finding and solving problems. Finally, she displayed active thinking. With her good interpersonal skills, she was always ready to listen to others’ comments and opinions and to accept their reasonable suggestions. She was good at discovering the strengths of other students and learning from them.

Of course, she was not without her weaknesses. She was less naturally organized than some of students who could remember everything and never wrote anything down. But although her memory was not quite as good as theirs, she kept on top of things by using a to-do list and diary so as to know where she was with her work.

6. Please comment on any task, project or other situation in which the applicant has been involved which may demonstrate his or her potential a manager or a responsible team member?

The annual student organization festival was the most important campus event of our university. As an important platform for exchanges and communication, the festival allowed different student organizations to exhibit their achievements, enrich the campus culture and student life, and expand the influence of our university. All the student organizations would invite teachers and students from other universities and the alumni in all walks of life to participate in the festival. Naturally, the university authorities tended to attach great importance to the festival.

In 20xx, as chairman of the “XXXX Association”, Miss Xxx led her members in staging the “Love Our Nature and Love Our Campus” campaign as part of the festival. She worked out a very detailed work plan and made good division of labor among the members. On her own part, she was responsible for overall coordination within the university and for external liaison. Her effective leadership and careful organization, combined with the close coordination of the members, laid a solid foundation for the success of the event. With her outstanding communication skills, the Association succeeded in inviting a student delegation from Sydney University which was on an exchange program on environmental protection in Shanghai. The presence of the delegation added much credit to their campaign. As it turned out, the event Miss Xxx organized proved very successful and was very well received. The Australian students were impressed by our students’ strong awareness of environmental protection and believed that those students could grow into an important force of environmental protection in China. The Association was given the Award for Original Contributions for the Year 20xx and it was Miss Xxx who brought honor to the university.

7. Please comment on the rankings you have given and on any other factors which you believe should be drawn to the attention of the British Embassy Selection Committee in assessing the suitability of this candidate for the British Chevening Scholarships Programme for China.

I have given the rankings based on my assessment of Miss Xxx’s overall performance in her peer group, which is her class that had 80 students in all. Undoubtedly, she was very distinguished. Since she is to undertake advanced academic studies, I would like to call your attention to other valuable qualities in Miss Xxx. First, she achieved outstanding academic excellence during her undergraduate programme. In addition, she is a very aspiring student who is always determined to make comprehensive improvements and progress by assimilating new knowledge. Finally, with her demonstrated perseverance and stamina, she can endure heavy pressure and turn such pressure into a strong motivation. She can adjust herself into her best condition, which would ensure her most successful completion of her studies in the UK.
