Describe a failure or setback in your life. How did you overcome this setback? What, if anything, would you do differently if confronted with this situation again? (500 words)

When I was nine years old, I was involved in a traffic accident that caused me to lose almost all of my teeth. The next four years of my life were filled with pain, loneliness and isolation. I was not able to speak and eat like the other children, and people could easily see that I was a boy without teeth. My doctors told me and my family that my "adult" teeth would come in when I was around twelve years old, which seemed like an eternity for me at the time. My classmates referred to me as a monkey and mostly kept their distance from me. Children can be cruel and the reasons for keeping their distance were clear - a boy without teeth is not exactly a handsome creature. As just a young boy, this was a huge setback in my life. From being a normal nine year old, I suddenly became an unattractive object of teasing and ridicule. I became very depressed and withdrawn. I just stayed at home, refusing to play with any kids, and refusing to participate in any social activities. I was just afraid of meeting anyone because of the fear that they too would make fun of me.

My parents encouraged me to have hope for the future. They tried their best to teach me that I could overcome any obstacle. I therefore learned to approach my loneliness with bravery, viewing it as a challenge to rise above. Finally, during the summer after I graduated from primary school, some of my new teeth came in, although my incisors did not. The self-confidence that my new teeth gave me was profound and I realized that I had endured much pain and loneliness, but that I had survived. I began to seek out new friendships at school, and took part in activities such as swimming, badminton, basketball and the art club. Through it all, my newfound attitude toward new challenges remained the same. In every examination or competition, I told myself that I could excel; nothing could be more difficult than the pain I had already overcome. By the time I entered the third year of middle school, all of my new teeth had come in and I was fully recovered both socially and physically. Moreover, I had learned to be self-confident and to never fear failure. This experience echoes now throughout both my personal life and my professional life, and it gives me the inner desire to succeed at any endeavor. Through the self-confidence gained from this experience, I have also developed a firm foundation in leadership skills.

Failures and setbacks happen quite often in life. Without such trials and tribulations, life is not complete and we can never realize how happy life can truly be. This experience taught me how to address setbacks in life - we must always be confident and have a positive attitude towards life. We are what we think!
