Personal and professional experience and background that will contribute to the diversity of the class, and enhance the educational experience of other students. (800 words)

I know that the beliefs and values that have been shaped by both my personal and professional experiences as a native of the Chinese mainland will define the tremendous contribution that I can make as an MBA candidate at your widely respected business school.

First of all, I am a man of character with many unique life experiences. As one example, my girlfriend and I fell in love in 1996. Our relationship is built on millions of tiny little things that in combination show that we are meant to be together. In December 2000, my girlfriend was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She was extremely frustrated and refused treatment because she was afraid that I would leave her because of her disease. I knew that she loved me deeply and trusted me completely, so I was able to persuade her to accept treatment by promising her that I would take care of her forever, no matter what. Although she was in more pain than most of us could imagine, she still managed to smile whenever she saw me. At this time, I faced an uncertain future - should I stick with my girlfriend and face the possibility that she would have a life of relentless suffering or should I take the coward's way out and leave her? The choice was easy - my love for her made me realize that I could find the strength to help her through this tremendous challenge. Every time that I went to the hospital to see her, the smile on her face made me realize that I had made the right choice. Her terrible physical symptoms such as severe anemia, grief, lethargy, apathy, thoughts of suicide and tremendous pain would have tested the limits of anyone. Unfortunately during this time, I had to take the GMAT and TOEFL exams and my results showed that I was distracted. But in taking care of her day in and day out, my character and world perspective matured. I abandoned all of my leisure pursuits except diet therapy and psychology, hoping that I could use what I learned to help improve both her physical and mental health.

Through this experience, I have learned that if a man has the courage to follow his heart, he can do anything, even become a successful businessman. I know now that my mature character and unique personal and professional experiences will make me an invaluable asset in your program. A man is defined by the choices that he makes in life. I chose to stay with my girlfriend through good times and bad times. I have realized that the best way to take care of her for the rest of her life is to pursue my MBA degree in your esteemed program to further develop my professional career.

In addition, my work experience with Japanese and Korean corporations, my in-depth knowledge of chemicals, particularly in the areas of international trading and plastics, and my unique perspective and understanding of the similarities and differences in doing business in China, Japan and Korea will allow me to make a genuinely unique contribution to your school. I have gained firsthand knowledge of management, marketing strategies, and the business environments of important plastics producing nations such as Japan, Korea, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. I can introduce many different perspectives into classroom discussions and case studies. Through my work experience, I have gained a profound understanding of the effects of economic and political changes on international trade. As a buyer, I have had to adapt to the constantly changing variables of the marketplace; as a seller, I was forced to be creative to find a niche for our products against keen competition. I would become a reliable source of information about business and culture in general in East Asia for my classmates.

Furthermore, because China is one of the most rapidly growing markets in the world, my familiarity with small and middle-sized companies there would be an invaluable asset to my classmates. Over the past several years, China has undergone tremendous changes in economic policy reform, with small and mid-sized companies being forced to adapt to unparalleled changes to remain competitive. My experiences give me a unique insight into the impact of these changes on both state-owned and private companies.

Finally, as a businessman, I witnessed China's accession to WTO and the implementation of its commitments. I can offer invaluable and direct information to my classmates that are interested in how China has changed since its entry into WTO. With my direct experience, I can share my perspective not only on the changes in the Chinese plastics and chemical markets but on the Chinese market as a whole, as well as the expected economic benefits from WTO, such as more transparent trading laws and certain civil reforms.
