Recommendation Letter for Mr. Huang RL1

1. How long have you known the applicant and in what connection? Please comment on the frequency and context of your interaction.

It has been four years since I got to know Mr. Huang Jiang. In 1998, at a branch company summation meeting, I met Mr. Huang for the first time as he was making a summation on behalf of the ShangHai Branch Corporation. In 1999 when I was concurrently the general manager of the HuangHe Group's provincial management department, Mr. Huang was appointed as the general manager of the LiuZhou Branch Co. under my nomination and worked directly under my administration. In early 2001, he wanted to get back to Beijing for development. At that time I was responsible for the TaLin digital systematic integrated business. Considering his strong management experience and overall capacity, I appointed him as vice general manager of the management division under the systematic integration department in charge of routine management.

2. If applicable, briefly describe the applicant's role in your organization.

In 1999 when Mr. Huang served as general manager of the ShangHai Branch Co, he was in overall charge of the branch company's operational management, the opening up of HuangHe Group business in GuangXi Province as well as the sales, profits and management. In 1999, LiuZhou Branch Co ranked third out of nine HuangHe Group branch companies. In 2000 when the HuangHe Group carried out restructuring, Mr. Huang served as the Board chairman and general manager of a restructured branch company. In 2001 Mr. Huang returned to Beijing for development, and served as vice general manager of business management division (BMD) of the systematic integration department (SID). The SID was in charge of TaLin network and systematic integration business. In 2001, the sales volume totaled USD 220 million and the profits stood at USD 11 million. The function of the BMD was roughly equivalent to a strategic planning division in charge of decision making and management implementation for the SID with Mr. Huang in charge of the routine work.

3. What do you consider the applicant's talents or strengths?

I hold that Mr. Huang's talents or strengths included capability to work under strong pressure. Upholding a positive and aggressive mentality and a spirit of continuous self-improvement. Making consistent summation and enhancement of his work and modestly listening to the opinions and suggestions of his superiors, colleagues and inferiors. Keeping a sense of responsibility and making great exertions to fulfill the work assigned to him. A strong learning and analytic capacity. A strong desire to make progress and work hard for the pursuit of his goal.

4. What do you consider the application's weakness or development needs?

In terms of weakness, I consider Mr. Huang was weak mainly in two aspects. First, he did not have very sufficient experience in managing a large company. In his nearly five years of management experience, three years and more were spent in a branch company that had few management levels. The management of a large company would be more complicated, involving more levels of management, the management of more departments, more inter-personal coordination and more matrixes in management. Mr. Huang is less experienced in managing a multi-level large company. I consider he needs further improvement in communication and coordination between departments at the same level.

Second, Huang has not accumulated much experience in the cooperation with foreign corporations, and in cross-cultural exchanges. This is also an aspect in which Mr. Huang needs further enhancement.

5. In what development areas has the applicant changed most over time?

In the four years of our acquaintance, I consider the greatest change and development area he has made is the enhancement of overall capacity. Or we may put it this way: When he just entered our company, he was a professional talent strong in financial management and analysis. After five years of conscious training and tireless efforts, he has become a compound talent with a comprehensive understanding of operational management and operational capacity. He has become more cheerful and mature in coping with worldly affairs. Even in doing a professional work, for example, in making an operational analysis, he would analyze from a more unique angle and find things of greater concern to the general manager. Or in other words, he can manage to stand more on a stance from an overall situation and grasp the essence of his work.

6. What impact has this person had on the organization in which he works?

When he served as general manager of the LiuZhou Branch Co, Mr. Huang achieved a fine credit and made a great contribution to opening up the HuangHe Group market in GuanXi Province and played a good role in the branch-company. During the period of branch company restructuring, he successfully accomplished his task to restructure the branch-company. While minimizing the undesirable influence, he made a successful business transition and trained a qualified contingent of successors. He did not leave until the Branch Company went to steady operation, thus ensuring the interests of the local workers and staff as well as the healthy development of the Branch Company. While serving the business management division (BMD) of the systematic integration department (SID), Mr. Huang played an important role in policy decision support, management implementation and market scheming. He displayed a very good role in organizing and scheming in the course of working out a five-year SID plan.

7. What will this individual be doing in ten years? Why?

I consider the individual would have a good vocational perspective in the next ten years. He would continue to make progress on the basis of his past experience and become an outstanding professional manager. I cherish a high hope that he will succeed in going abroad for more advanced studies. If so, he will become an international figure. With his unique advantage, he will either become a manager of a multinational corporation China branch, or the manager of a Chinese company. As such, he will make positive contribution to promoting the cooperation between the Chinese and foreign companies or to enhancing enterprise management levels. As China entered the WTO last year, he will in the next ten years become familiar with both the Chinese and Western cultures. With rich management experience and having gone through systematic MBA studies, he would have a greater arena to play his role on.

8. Please give us your appraisal of the applicant in terms of the qualities listed below. Describe the reference group you are using.
(略)

The reference group: This refers to cadres at and above managerial level in my company. TaiLin Digit is electronics commerce -oriented company. It is one of the two listed companies subordinate to the HuangHe Holding Corp with a staff of 3600, of whom over 300 are cadres at and above the managerial level.

9. The Harvard business school is committed to developing outstanding leaders who can inspire trust and confidence in others, please comment on the applicant's behavior (e.g., respect for others, honesty, integrity, accountability for personal behavior) within your organization and in the community.

In early 2000, the HuangHe Group restructured its branch companies and LiuZhou Branch Co was restructured into net assets with the stocks held by branch company managers and by HuangHe workers and staff for mortgage against payment by installments. If Mr. Huang Jiang had returned to Beijing, he would have not only obtained a better position, but would have also sold part of his HuangHe stocks without delay, for the HuangHe stock prices were at their peak at the time. If he had returned to Beijing, since the LiuZhou Branch Co had many veteran managers, there would have been no proper candidate successors, if he had departed immediately. This would have resulted in the split of the company, and the restructured company would have run a major risk in its development perspective. So would have been the case with the safety of HuangHe assets. Out of overall consideration, Huang finally opted for staying behind in LiuZhou for one year more, and led the company in completing its cancellation and in achieving the transfer of its business mode. He did not return to Beijing until he had finished training the new leading group and everything had embarked on the path of regular development. This fully proved that Mr. Huang is a responsible man, a man that would abandon his personal interests for the sake of the company, and a man that treasures his credit and reputation.

10. Please feel free to comment on the ratings that you have assigned in number 8 and make additional statements about the applicant's record, potential, or personal qualities that you believe would be helpful to the admission Board in considering this person's application for the MBA program.

Compared with those I evaluated, Mr. Huang belongs to the younger group. That he has been able to grow mature only several years after university graduation is mainly attributable to his positive aggressiveness, his sincere quality and his good habits of learning and summing up diligently. I believe he has a great potential for development, and above all he will have a good opportunity. In the coming decades, China will become ever more internationalized. And business leaders will play a greater role than ever before. I greatly appreciate Mr. Huang's bravery in his decision and determination to take up the MBA program in the United States even at the expense of his immediate stable livelihood. The decision in itself has fully proved that he is a man of strong aggressiveness, a man of great confidence and determination.
