Why this MBA at this school, at this time. What is your short and long term professional goals. How personal abilities and professional experience with the MBA will help you to realize the goals. (750-800words)

During the past several years, as my professional responsibilities have changed, my career goals have been both defined and refined. I have gained extensive managerial experience while learning to work in a team-oriented environment in my position as an international sales manager in the plastics industry. My initial interest in earning my MBA degree began only a year after I assumed the position of sales manager of the chemical department with Nissho Iwai (Qingdao) Corporation, where I first became truly aware that my present skills and knowledge were not adequate to deal with some of the broader strategy questions that are faced by senior level managers.

During my employment with FGHJ, from June 1999 to May 2001, I developed not only a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the international trade and plastics industries, but I also learned how to be responsible for controlling orders, arranging production schedules, attracting new customers, negotiating with buyers, training employees, building strategies based on sales histories and determining appropriate pricing strategies for our markets. My position with Nissho Iwai gave me even more experience with the business side of the chemical industry.

Because NIC is a comprehensive trading company with offices and subsidiaries all over the world, I was fortunate to be exposed to all areas of the business dealing with the worldwide trading of chemical products. As sales manager, I began to understand that the two main functions of a global trading company are 1) to provide different purchase financing options for buyers and 2) to assist the development of mid-size and smaller companies by taking advantage of the synergies involved with a global trading company's capital and human resources on a worldwide basis. As a result, I gained tremendous knowledge about the various chemical products while simultaneously expanding my knowledge about the worldwide marketplace and how to recognize which products and companies have the best potential for success. Furthermore, I was exposed to a variety of different cultures, which quite often have very different ways of thinking and doing business. I was also able to observe the real situations of many Chinese and foreign companies, particularly in the ways that they manage, their technical levels, abilities to import and export different products, capacities to obey international trading rules, abilities to constantly develop their companies and their individual abilities to analyze their chosen markets. But once I had assumed the sales manager position with NIC, I realized that even though I always had different ideas for managing our chemical department, I lacked the skills and theoretical knowledge to implement these ideas. My desire is to learn market and financial analysis techniques to help make policy decisions on the best ways to develop our business. I want to master different approaches to human resource management and employee training so that I may instill proper moral values to conduct our business with integrity. I need to learn the different theories on general business management so that I can apply them to my real-life business situations. I know that I need to develop both my quantitative and technological skills through studying in your MBA program to reach my fullest potential as a leader in business. My ultimate goal is to become a successful leader with a prestigious multinational corporation such as General Electric or perhaps to manage my own firm.

The purpose of earning my MBA now is to supplement my work experience and to gain a high intensity exposure to some of the other business functions with which I have not been involved previously. I know that a successful manager needs a broad ability to understand all areas of a business. Once I have earned my MBA degree from your highly respected program, my short-term goal is to obtain a senior level position with a prestigious corporation where I can use both my hard earned education and my business experience in developing and managing a chemical business.

Based on my extensive work experience with the international trading of chemical products and my ability to manage, combined with the analytical, quantitative and leadership skills that I will have learned in your esteemed business school, my long-term career objective is to become an expert in international chemical trading. I would like to start my own company in China to expedite the development of international chemical product trading between China and other countries. In addition, I would like to use my knowledge and experience to assist more Chinese companies with introducing their products to foreign countries. In the process, I would also like to help these companies to develop more hi-tech products to increase their competitive abilities in the worldwide marketplace. The knowledge that I can gain from your graduate school of business is a critical component in my plan, on both a professional and personal level.
