In my capacity as president of the School of Economics, Renmin University of China (RUC), I would like to offer my utmost support to Miss XXX xx who is currently applying for acceptance into your Master’s programme in Financial Economics. Having received systematic academic training at what is perhaps the best university of social sciences in China, Miss XXX is perfectly qualified for her chosen course.

The Department of Economics is perhaps the strongest faculty within RUC and even in this most competitive academic environment, Miss XXX has succeeded in fighting her way into the top tier of students—her distinguished academic performance is indicated by an average grade of 88/100 in nearly 60 courses she has taken over the past three years. She is the top 3rd student among about 80 students in Grade 20XX. To be consistently ranked among the top students, only sustained efforts and stamina, and the determination to pursue excellence, can account for the achievement. As president of the School, I have awarded a number of meritorious honors and scholarships to her. She has also been the receiver of prizes from corporate organizations. In her second year, she was the Outstanding Student of RUC, a title which is restricted to the top 5% students.

As a professor of economics and finance, I have be an instructor of Corporate Finance, Intermediate Microeconomics, and Financial Economics. In taking some of these courses, Miss XXX obtained very high grades in the finals. Through a number of course projects and papers, she exhibited impressive caliber in applying relevant economic and financial theories to analyzing and solving practical problems. In particular, the course Microeconomics presented much challenge to students. Instead of using a Chinese textbook, I chose Microeconomics: A Modern Approach by Hal R. Varian. The book contains a large amount of information very difficult to learn, and it involves a great deal of mathematical formulas and computation to describe accurately the behavior of the individuals. Miss XXX’s industry and quantitative skills helped her get a 97/100 grade, the highest in the class.

Impressed by her distinction, I was most ready to have discussions with her concerning the topics that interest her. I gave her guidance concerning financial systems and asset pricing. I also recommended that she read the newspaper Financial Times to keep her well-informed of the developments in the global market. On her part, she would discuss with me some interesting articles she found in the publication, showing tremendous initiative to learn as much as possible outside the classroom environment. Her initiative was further embodied in doing a course project on statistics. At my recommendation, she carried out statistical analysis by applying regressive study regarding the earning ratio and the P/E ratio of Chinese stocks. She also learned how to examine the stock market from professional perspectives. When taking the Corporate Finance course, she tried to investigate into the prospect of a company’s growth and investment value by scrutinizing the financial statements disclosed by this particular company. In this way, she has developed her acute market intuition and sensitivity.

Outside her academic studies, Miss XXX has sought to increase her knowledge and skills through various channels. She is a pivotal figure of the SIFE (Students in Free Enterprises) RUC Branch, a non-profit organization that prepares students to be future business leaders. There, she has not only helped expand the organization but also organized entrepreneurial proposal contests, honing her leadership abilities. She attended seminars, conferences, lectures and workshops where she had the opportunity to listen to leading economists and researchers talking on latest domestic and international economic issues. She has been doing internships at leading financial institutions in Beijing where she has gained basic understanding of the country’s industry and the changes and the challenges it faces. Being a teacher herself at a leading educational enterprise, she has improved her skills as a public speaker, in addition to honing her aptitudes in leadership, management and executing her responsibilities.

It is truly noteworthy that, as an undergraduate, Miss XXX has accomplished so much in her academic and personal development. Compared with most of her fellow students, she has prepared more sufficiently for her future by seeking an international education in the UK where teaching and research in the field of finance and accounting are most developed. Strongly motivated, Miss XXX has well-defined objectives regarding her future academic and professional development. I have full confidence that she will continue to excel in her proposed studies and she will surely prove herself a wonderful student worthy of the prestige of your university.
