Oxford MSc in Financial Economics Essay 2

Please list below your hobbies, interests, and achievements, and any club or societies of which you are currently a member.

I have two important hobbies which I have cultivated since my early childhood. First, I love painting. In learning to paint, I learned how to observe the world around us, how it is presented to our perception and how we react to this world. I also learned to appreciate the beauty of nature and contemplate on how man and nature could co-exit in perfect harmony. Finally, I have learned to capture accurately the expressions on people’s face when I do portraiture paintings, and to interpret their underlying implications. In a word, by practicing painting, I have learned to be a keen observer, a thinker and a creator. As a result, I have been awarded several prizes in both international competitions and national competitions respectively.

Another important hobby is playing Guzheng, a traditional Chinese string instrument. The instrument is perfect for both public performance and for the private cultivation of the player’s temperament and the shaping of personal character. I started learning how to play Guzheng when I was five and I received the most rigorous training. I used to spend two hours everyday on practicing, no matter how heavy my coursework at school might be. In this way, I not only kept improving my technical skills of playing this unique instrument but also cultivated my stamina, perseverance and the goal-oriented determination. In addition, I developed the commitment to the highest level of expertise through sustained efforts. By the time I was in the middle school, I obtained the Certificate of Accomplishment (Performance Diploma-Level 8) of the China Conservatory, a qualification that could allow me to make public performances. Throughout my middle, high school and the university careers, I have been playing Guzheng on occasions of public shows, evening parties, cultural festivals, and have helped to enrich the cultural diversity of the campus.

With the commitment to working for the public good, I have been actively involved in extracurricular activities at university which have been crucial in enhancing my leadership abilities and in allowing me to make contributions to the general welfare of my fellow students. As a finance student, I joined STUDENTS IN FREE ENTERPRISE (SIFE, http://www.xxx.org) not long after I entered university. I felt proud for being its member because SIFE is an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. In May 20XX, I became project manager of SIFE Renmin University of China Association and as such launched EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) 20XX and EOP 20XX. For the EOP 20XX, I planned, directed and launched the project “Kinds Play the Big”, in which we popularized elementary finance knowledge at two local primary schools, helped them put on flea markets where they could exchange toys and used books. We shot videos and gave lectures about cash, the use of commodities, the supply and demand, and the use of trade.

In 20XX, I became the Vice President of SIFE Renmin University of China Association and I took on increasingly important responsibilities. I was responsible for recruiting new members and offering training programs to them so as to promote our organizational growth. In addition, I launched publicity campaigns to enhance the influence of our activities. For the EOP 20XX, our project was “Economics in Environmental Conservation:Saving Means Earning”. Aimed at delivering environmental sustainable perceptions, we carried out the project in 6 junior and senior high schools among the students aged 13 to 19. Through conservation efforts such as saving water and electricity and cycling batteries, we taught them how much energy and resources they can save in their school lives, and thus how much benefit they could gain, through doing investigations and working out solutions in small groups. In launching this project, we invited professors from our university to give lectures to high school students.

As our association expanded its influence, our projects went beyond campus. In 20XX, we launched the “Weaving and Knitting Your Warmth” project in which our members organized unemployed women in urban and rural areas in Beijing, those who possess weaving and knitting skills, to make a wide variety of weaving and knitting products. Some of those products, like shopping bags, could replace plastic bags for shopping, and were thus highly environmentally friendly. Shops were opened both on-line and off-line, and those shops were supported by a whole system of training, advertising, market, and management strategies. This project not only helped unemployed women have a stable source of income but also satisfied their entrepreneurial impulses and enhanced their market economy awareness. At present, our Association is planning to create a unified trademark for those products and help open chain stores to make the project a sustainable one. The success of this project has been covered by several media and it has been rated by SIFE China as the Most Representative Model Project. With all the achievements we made in various projects, I led the RUC Team to win the Best Team Award in the EOP Contest of the year.

Through this valuable experience, I have realized how I can leverage the personal educational experiences of myself and of my fellow students, the expertise of our faculty advisors, and resources of our institution to implement programs that create real economic opportunities for members of our community. As a leader of the SIFE team, I have learned how to guide, engage, and motivate my team to fulfill our objectives.

Although I have been substantially engaged in performing extracurricular responsibilities, I have not compromised my academic performance. “Excellence” is the very word to describe my performance at RUC, the most prestigious social science university in China. I have kept soaring throughout the semesters by tapping my full academic potential and initiative, ending up being the top 3 in the entire class consisting of approximately 60 students, with an average grade of 88/100 in all the 59 courses over the past three years. For this achievement, I have been awarded merit-based scholarships for three consecutive years.

In my challenging but rewarding undergraduate career so far, I have made important achievements both as a socially responsible person and as a student. With the SIFE doctrine “A Head for Business and A Heart for the World”, I believe I am sufficiently prepared for making even more important achievements in the future.
