Given your experience in your present situation (employment or school), if you were given the opportunity to effect one change, what would it be and how would you make that change? (500words)

During the past several years I have become increasingly aware of the dangers caused by pollution of the environment by my very own industry – the papermakers of China. In 1990, I was fortunate enough to visit the Huaihe River. I was deeply attracted by the spectacular natural beauty of this part of China. Under a clear blue sky you could hear children’s laughter as they played in the crystal clear water, you could see an old man fishing on the banks of the river or catch a glimpse of the birds and small animals that called this area home. The beautiful Huaihe River stretched out ahead just like a sacred road to heaven. In such peaceful surroundings, a person could forget all about life’s problems and just enjoy being a part of nature.

Unfortunately, things changed very quickly. When I visited again in 1999, I was shocked by what I saw – there were no longer wide, fertile fields on either side of the river. The fields of wheat had been replaced by hundreds of small paper factories. The sky was polluted and gray. In place of the crystal clear water, there was now a bad smelling, befouled, turbid river that roared ahead, seeming to publicly proclaim its discontent. Rows of pipes drained untreated pollutants directly into the river, looking like cannons shooting deadly chemicals into the water. The severe pollution caused by these paper factories spoiled what had been a beautiful, peaceful area and left me feeling very disturbed by what I had seen.

Since that day, I have had a dream – to make my papermaking company into a pioneer for environmental protection and pollution control by using my work experience and inside knowledge of the papermaking industry to the best of my potential. I want to make my company into a role model for the rest of the industry to follow.

To make my dream come true, I will have to change my company from the inside out. I will start by teaching the company’s employees about the importance of environmental protection and ask them to protect the environment as they would their own child. For the product structure and operating strategy of the company, I will introduce and develop more high technologies and equipment that can effectively eliminate environmental pollution. For the customers, I would have my company focus more on doing work for papermaking factories rather than the end-users, thus allowing us to combat pollution at its source. Although it will likely be expensive, this strategy would fit well with the Chinese government’s increasing emphasis on environmental protection. Customers can be reminded that we are not only saving the environment for us but for our future generations. I have a deep conviction that I can succeed in making these changes because it not only conforms to the integral strategy of global environmental protection but also to the benefit and development of human beings. My dream is to have our company known as the first environmentalist papermaking company.
