Diversity Statement

The University of XXX School of Law seeks to enroll a wide variety of students (including individuals from groups underrepresented in the legal profession as well as those who have experienced economic, social, or educational disadvantages because of their personal circumstances or characteristics). We find that a breadth of experiences and viewpoints enriches the educational environment for everyone. Please write a statement discussing what you might contribute to the diversity of experiences and viewpoints of the student body.

In seeking to enter the J. D. program at XXX Universiy School of Law, I am determined to contribute to the diversity of the experiences and perspectives of the student community and enrich the learning experience of each fellow student.

In the rapidly changing modern world, the legal profession faces increasingly complicated challenges that whose solution demands interdisciplinary and even multi-disciplinary knowledge. Academically, with a Bachelor’s degree in English language and literature, a Master’s degree in computer science, and a Master’s degree in Accountancy, I have knowledge and skills in humanities, science and engineering, and social science. If admitted into XXX Universiy, I will have advanced training in law. In case studies, my four-faceted knowledge will allow me to contribute integrated thinking and holistic solutions to legal issues.

In addition, as a U.S. Certified Public Accountant, I have several years of professional experiences in industries ranging from corporate organizations, U.S. government institution, law firms, mostly in Washington D.C. and, with my accounting and financial expertise, I have assisted attorneys in dealing with legal cases involving anti-piracy, anti-trust, and international trade. In group discussions, I can share my knowledge about the challenges in practicing law in real-world situations and about the qualities and skills that future legal professionals must develop.

My racial background as a Chinese will also enable me to make important contributions. Admittedly, my home country is experiencing rapid and vibrant economic growth, but the rule of law is far from adequate. The key problem is that the government believes, or would like to mislead the Chinese people into believing, that a certain degree of economic prosperity may substitute for reforms in legal and political spheres. I hope to raise this issue for discussion—how legal and political civilizations should be promoted and the totalitarian rule of the current regime be changed in order to meet the Chinese people’s desire for democracy and freedom. I hope to explore the legal foundation for the recent claim that China is a country that belongs to the Chinese people, not to the communist party.

Finally, apart from my strong proficiency in English and Chinese language, I also have basic command of Japanese and French. This means that I will have much facility in communicating and interacting extensively with fellow students from different countries and cultures. In addition, I have always worked as a student leader and a volunteer for pro bono community services. I am prepared to play a leadership role in student life and to serve the needs of my fellow students.
