Dear Members of the Postgraduate Admissions Committee:

My name is XXX xxx. My current position is vice president of the International Business School, Beijing University of Foreign Studies. In addition, I am a professor of statistics and it was during the 5th semester, in 20XX, when I taught the course to Miss XXX xxx and the rest of her class that I got to know this in marvelous young lady. At present, she is making significant endeavors to enter your outstanding MSc Finance and Private Equity (1st Choice) / MSc Accounting and Finance (2nd Choice) and, over the past two years that I have known her, I have gained close understanding of her strong academic caliber and tremendous potential. I am convinced that she is perfectly qualified for your programme and earning your postgraduate degree in her chosen field will greatly enhance her career development in the future.

Miss XXX has a most strong motivation in seeking postgraduate education, just as she has informed her education at our university up to now with such a strong motivation, which has resulted in her achieving outstanding performance. She told me that, coming from Zhejiang Province which has the most developed private sector in the country, she is most strongly aware of the difficulties that private enterprises have to face when seeking loans, as most banks in China are state-owned and seldom grant loans to private enterprises. On the other hand, due to limited channels of investment, entrepreneurs with surplus capital can only lend their money to illegal underground financial organizations which create huge risks. Miss XXX is extremely interested in helping make the financial system more open by developing and introducing socially and legally acceptable financing models such as private equity and mutual fund or hedge funds. Undergraduate programs in China seldom cover the knowledge on those subjects, not to mention advanced courses. Therefore, LSE’s programme can exactly answer to her need to acquire all the relevant knowledge and skills for becoming a real-world practitioner.

It is perhaps due to her strong motivation throughout her undergraduate programme that Miss XXX has developed herself into one of the top students in our school. Her 3.90/4.0 GPA ranks her academic performance as the best in her class. With regard to the Statistics course, she was fully aware of the paramount importance of quantitative skills to finance and her great efforts in studying the course brought her exceptional outcomes—her grade was 89/100, one of the highest in the class. By learning the course, she grasped fundamental concepts and skills in the following aspects: data analysis; correlation and regression; sampling and experimental design; basic probability (random variables, expected values, normal and binomial distributions); hypothesis testing and confidence intervals for means, proportions, and regression parameters; use of spreadsheet software. In addition, I gave a special emphasis on the applications of statistics and probability to finance and Miss XXX was thus exposed to probability and statistical models, time series models, portfolio theory, capital asset pricing model, options pricing, fixed income securities, value-at-risk, GARCH models, nonparametric regression and Splines, and even behavioural finance. I believe her solid knowledge in finance-related statistics would give her a great groundwork for advanced studies at your institution.

The course was delivered in a bilingual manner, partially in Chinese and partially in English, but the textbooks used are all in English, by leading international scholars on the subject. We have quite a few international professors teaching courses in English and most Chinese teachers teach bilingually as I do.

Based on the final exam grades of all the students, I would like to indicate an overall assessment of the applicant’s ranking in class thus:

Top 5% Top 10% Top 25% Top 50% Bottom 50% Unable to comment
      Academic Performance
      Intellectual Ability
      Capacity for original thinking
      Motivation for further study
      Written and oral communication skills

I have always felt proud for the outstanding academic achievements Miss XXX has achieved. Her entire academic training at our university is truly comprehensive, covering all the key fields of finance, economics, and accounting. Her studies are also quite in-depth, because only though intensive self-study after classes can a student expect to perform really well in the final exams. In terms of the development of quantitative skills, Miss XXX later took another related course—Probability and Mathematical Statistics. She often consulted me about some challenging mathematical formulas and equations that she found from journals she read and sought my guidance. On those occasions I could never fail to be impressed by her enthusiasm. As to her writing, analytical and presentation skills, I would also like to describe her as outstanding, because her term papers and her leading role in group projects have all been very impressive. I think this is largely related to her inquiring mind and to her proactive personality.

Throughout her undergraduate programme, Miss XXX has not confined herself solely to academic studies. Instead, she has been most eager in seeking practical experiences through a series of internships at different financial organizations. As vice president of the International Business School, I have received plenty of highly positive feedback from her employers, who commented on her strong ability to apply knowledge to specific issues and to solve problems. She can adapt to changing environments and circumstances with much facility and can work under considerable pressure, generating high-quality analytical reports that were useful to the business in those organizations. Perhaps, a most relevant internship is the one she has been recently involved in at China Gateway, a private equity firm, where she has learned about the business practices of carrying out PE projects from senior partners with strong backgrounds at leading global financial institutions. I can see that Miss XXX has been making full preparations both for her MSc studies and for her career in the near future.

On our campus itself, Miss XXX has been most active in participating in extracurricular events and in assuming leadership roles. She was the director of the In-Coming and Exchange Department of AIESEC (BFSU Branch) and a student journalist at the BFSU Student News Agency. I enjoyed reading the articles she wrote on the newspaper published by the Agency in which she demonstrated her insights and even scathing comments. As a student, Miss XXX has realized rounded development both as a student and as an individual ready to contribute to our society. I believe she is a most worthy and competitive candidate for your esteemed programme and your acceptance of her application will be highly appreciated.
