Oxford MBA Essay 1 :
Explain why you chose your current job. How do you hope to see your career developing over the next five years? How will an MBA assist you in the development of these ambitions? Maximum 1,000 words.

I am a person who knows what I am doing, what I need to do to be what I want to be. Ambitious and enterprising, I’m always alert for right opportunities to be No. 1 among my peers. Even as an undergraduate at China’s best finance university, I achieved personal development in a well-planned manner. Besides achieving academic excellence as top student in class, I took the initiative to intern extensively at leading multinational companies. I was also committed to student well-being by playing a central role as a student leader.

Upon my graduation, my academic excellence, internship experiences, and leadership qualities were highly prized by Morgan Stanley HongKong Headquarters. Among thousands of applicants in mainland China, I was the sole undergraduate recruited to work in HongKong, Asia’s financial capital. A fast and smart learner, I emerged outstanding in rigorous trainings in over a dozen business domans and was involved, as the sole first-year analyst, in a direct investment project in Boloni worth 18 million USD, whereas average analysts have to wait two or three years for such opportunities.

A turning point came when, on a social occasion, I encountered Mr. Gong Shaoling, chairman of China Merchants Securities, a BIG FOUR in the country. As my alumnus, he made an attractive offer a 23-year-old ambitious young man could not resist—to lead a team of private equity (PE) fund in Beijing! This meant unlimited career opportunities for me —become an influential business leader amid the country’s PE boom.

With this defining decision, I have been leading the Beijing Team since early 20XX. During this most exciting and splendid period of my professional career, our 8- member team has completed financing for 5 major Chinese enterprises worth 250 million USD, winning high recognition from the top management. In Chinese business world, this legitimately constitutes a success legend. Moreover, I have helped the Headquarters complete the next round of financing worth 1000 million USD (from Japanese government’s pension fund, Mitsubishi, etc). By creating sound working relationships with government departments, I have enhanced fund operation efficiency. I am most proud for my central role in transforming the fund into the largest in China with overseas PE fund!

Upon completing my MBA, I will return to China to help a major European PE fund establish an office in China to operate and expand business there. In the on-going global financial crisis, China has emerged relatively unscathed. The relatively low risk and huge business growth potential of China as an emerging market create immense profit possibilities for European PE funds.

Intriguing as it is, the Chinese market has largely been a pitfall for for international PE funds due to their lack of an insider’s knowledge about China’s business environment and lack of effective working relations with government functionaries, rendering their long-term strategies ineffective. Whereas, a win-win result can be achieved if I, as a necessary bridge of localization, come together with an interested European organization, with its mature operation expertise.

As long as China’s PE market keeps booming, my envisioned objective is highly feasible. There is first my own expertise in operation PE funds. Second, I have developed the sufficiently powerful social and government resources. In April and June 20XX, I helped WI Harper Group and SAIF Partner create two fund centres in the Tianjin New Coast District, the country’s first offshore financial center that attracts PE and VC (venture capital). Finally, my communicative skills in international and domestic environments would help surmount all possible barriers in launching the business.

To be a business leader in the PE market remains my greatest ambition. The best business education I gained in China and will gain in UK, my past career with a leading PE fund in China and future career with a European fund, plus continuous accumulation of industrial experiences and deepened understanding of the global financial market, will enable me to fight my way to a top management position.

My career success will most probably unfold in the Tianjin New Coast District, the emerging largest financial centre in Northern China where I have the most extensive government support and industry connections. The Central Government and the Tianjin Municipal Government have offered preferential conditions to PE and VC investors and there are simply infinite opportunities for my career success. The Oxford MBA will definitely contribute to my career ambitions as I can develop acute business vision, strategic decision-making abilities, and sound and innovative leadership skills.

Your course structure is fascinating. While courses in finance, accountancy and marketing may overlap with my undergraduate courses, they are more advanced and taught from a different perspective, thus enriching my existing knowledge. Theoretical knowledge in management is what I sorely need, and it can be obtained from Decision Science, Strategy, Managerial Economics, Developing Effective Managers, and Operations Management. That’s why I highly value the programme’s heavy management orientation. Through an intensive series of stimulating lectures, energetic seminars, intensive small group work, and team project work, I can interact with faculty, classmates, and guest speakers and business leaders from whom I can learn a lot.

In the second and third terms, I can customise my learning experience to meet my individual career goals and aspirations.  I am most interested in the Private Equity Electives, co-taught by Tim Jenkinson, Professor of Finance and Humphrey Battcock, a Director of Advent International, whose leading edge research is melded with relevant real-life application. Through case studies, spreadsheet assignments and group presentation, I will gain in-depth understanding of the underlying issues and challenges in a profession I have already been working in. This part of the course structure is most valuable and relevant to me. Apart from coursework, I will meet people interested in operating business in China’s PE market.

My experience of working at Morgan Stanley in Hong Kong side by side with many wonderful British colleagues motivated me to a British education. The Oxford MBA, the world’s premier programme, convinces me of its absolute appropriateness for me at this stage of my professional development.
