Personal Statement of Purpose

Applicant: XXX (Joint Sino-UK Undergraduate Programme)          Programme: MSc Accounting & Finance, LSE

An aspiring student is the one who both looks back and looks ahead. In looking back, s/he reflects how well s/he has performed and tries to understand his/her real needs. In looking ahead, s/he makes sober-minded assessment of situations and envisions how s/he can best fit into the future scenario. I am that aspiring student who, located in the present which is a critical turning point, expects to link the past with the future and all my reflections converge into this impassioned application of mine for the MSc Accounting & Finance programme at LSE.

This application is an impassioned one because my academic endeavors to date have been impassioned. Without this passion, I could not have achieved that high level of excellence in China that qualified me for a most rewarding joint programme at a leading UK university, nor could I have managed to endure all the loneliness and sacrifices, both physical and mental, in being far away from my country and my parents. The passion is such that only LSE’s MSc Accounting & Finance, the best of its kind in the UK, can possibly have it consummated.

As a student, I have been studying accounting, that universal language of business, with true intellectual curiosity and commitment. My mother, a former financial manager of an investment company, shaped my early understanding about accounting—how to figure out from the figures in diverse financial statements how a corporation is operating, and how to predict potential risks, how to sharpen one’s business acumen with in-depth accounting knowledge. My father, a senior professional manager of a successful international company, has instilled in me how effective financial management in strict accordance with international principles and standards can contribute to the healthy growth of a global company. I realize that, by becoming a responsible accountant or financial professional, I would have a crucial role to perform.

This profound passion for accounting and finance from the very outset of my academic studies guaranteed my distinguished performance. During the two years at XXX University of Finance and Economics, I completed a total of 35 courses (107.5 credits), with an outstanding GPA of 90.8/100, ranked among the top 4% in the entire department. It was a significant achievement because such a heavy load of coursework contained advanced courses, delivered by British instructors, normally intended for senior students. I took advanced courses and obtained outstanding grades by cracking all the difficulties solely because I wished to qualify for the unique yet highly selective “2 plus 2” joint programme at the University of XXX (UK). It was with sheer stamina that I accomplished balanced yet exceptional performance, honored as Meritorious Student and awarded top-level university scholarship for academic excellence for two consecutive years.

My academic background in both China and the UK has prepared me perfectly for your MSc programme. The first vital component covers a whole array of specialized courses in finance, economics, accounting, marketing, and management. A second crucial component consists of quantitative and computer courses, ranging from calculus, linear algebra, probability and mathematical statistics, database management, computer science to management information system. This second component would certainly boost my more advanced studies and research in finance and accounting, which are heavily quantitative and analytical in nature. The third critical component is my English language proficiency. As a freshman, I passed Band-IV and Band-VI College English Test with two “Excellent” grades. Normally, students schedule those two tests for the second and the fourth year, and even so quite a few would fail. Also in the first year, I took my first IELTS test and obtained an overall score of 7.5. As my first IELTS test result has expired by now, I have taken another one, with improvements in three sections. With proven excellence in all of those three major fields, I became one of a limited number of students to undertake the joint programme at the University of Exeter.

At Exeter, my scholastic aptitudes were challenged by the need to adapt to a new academic environment, with new instructors, new ways of instruction and new pedagogical tasks. Nevertheless, I proved them by accomplishing equally proud achievements—winning First-class Honours (78) and Dean’s Commendation, awarded to less than one in forty students. My knowledge base in finance and accounting has been significantly expanded by the inclusion of core courses like financial accounting, audit, management accounting, accounting models for management decision, and statistics for business and management. Five more courses in the final year—taxation, financial management, corporate law, financial reporting and analysis, corporate governance, accountability and audit—would definitely make my academic foundation as comprehensive as it is in-depth.

I have derived three vital benefits from studying in the UK. The first is extensive case studies in core modules which, apart from deepening my understanding and allowing me to investigate theories in a real-life context, have honed my skills in quantitative reasoning and in retrieving and integrating qualitative evidence from various sources. The second is group work that corresponds to each module, in which huge amount of independent study required for preparing reports deepened my understanding of specific issues while enhancing my research caliber in collecting, classifying and integrating useful data and in solving practical problems. Finally, being proactive, I have served as team leader most group projects, improving my leadership and organizing skills in formulating overall objectives and in breaking up an entire project into manageable components for individual team members. Cross-cultural communication, coordination, and teamwork are among many valuable qualities developed.

For a student of finance and accounting, her training would be gravely incomplete without real-world experiences. This awareness has driven me to undertake summer practicum projects in China over the past two years. Interning at XXX Bank, China’s major commercial bank, I was exposed to credit and loan business and I acquired knowledge and skills in risk analysis involved in issuing loans to enterprises. I learned how to analyze credit data and perform ratio analysis to assess the profitability, liquidity and solvency of a company, thus evaluating the degree of risk of extending credit or lending money. Meanwhile, working with a credit manager, whose job included consulting with customers to address complaints and verifying financial and credit transactions, I gained insights into professional practices and interpersonal skills in a real-world workplace.

Then, at XXX Electronics & Specialty Gases (Suzhou) Co., Ltd, a member of The XXX Group which is a world leading supplier of industrial, process and speciality gases, I became very interested in applying my knowledge in management accounting. In helping preparing the company’s monthly statements and financial reports as assistant accountant, I used absorption cost and variable cost to analyze variations in the final profit and their effects on income statement. While improving my caliber in financial analysis, I have realized the strategic importance for enterprises to implement JIT (Just in Time) operation. Moreover, I saw how a sound financial system of a company functions as a locomotive in promoting an enterprise’s continuous improvement.

Now, fully prepared and truly motivated, I am ready to embark on a premier Msc programme. I expect to continue benefiting from the distinctive and unparalleled British education in finance and accounting and have implicit faith in attaining that high level of excellence as in the past. LSE, located in the time-honored financial centre of Europe, identifies itself as an outward looking institution actively involved in world affairs. This global context is vital for my future career as a financial manager in a multinational enterprise. Additionally, learning from world-class faculties teaching and research at the forefront of their subject areas, I can be well grounded in my specialized area. Your Msc Accounting and Finance programme fascinates me with its heavy emphasis on Corporate Finance and Asset Market, and Management Accounting, Strategy and Organizational Control, all of which are most closely geared to my learning needs as well as my career aspirations. If I cannot be placed in the above-mentioned programme, I am also willing to enter the MSc Finance and Economics as my background is a perfect fit for it and advanced economics knowledge would allow me to examine the financial industry and the financial market, both Chinese and global, in a much broader context. In addition, the programme’s emphasis on the development of research skills will add significant depths to my insights. Both the knowledge and research skills in finance and economics are integral components of the entire training of a would-be financial professional.

I am convinced that completing your prestigious programme would equip me with the firmest footing for career development. I expect to start by working in the audit field and, to enhance my competitiveness, I will strive to pass ACCA exams within a couple of years. By becoming an internal auditor of a globally renowned company or a listed company would significantly heighten my understanding of auditing as an integral part of financial management, which comprises of monitoring of corporate operation, evaluation and authentication of various qualifications. In 3 to 5 years, I hope to transfer to a leading multinational company based in China and fight my way to the position of a financial manager. With accumulated experiences and demonstrated professionalism, I expect to become a CFO capable of contributing to the decision-making process of the top management. I am particularly interested in developing a huge network of connections and I look forward to providing specialized consulting to customers, especially those Chinese entrepreneurs wishing to develop and expand business in the UK.

As a matter of fact, having been a much indebted beneficiary of the British education, I wish to be of benefit to the UK itself. I have applied to work as a volunteer for the 2012 London Olympic Games and I have been notified of a qualifying interview. With growing cultural and business ties between China and the UK, I believe I can contribute to this dynamic and vibrant relationship in many important ways.
