Dear Admissions Officer:

Mr. XXX (or Keane as we call him) joined the Irdeto Beijing Development Center in March 20XX and I was his immediate report manager for nearly two years that he worked with Irdeto. According to what I have observed, Keane demonstrated strong professionalism, outstanding learning abilities, high work ethics, and effective teamwork.

Irdeto is a subsidiary of the international media company Naspers (NASDAQ: NPSN and JSE: NPN), with headquarters located in Amsterdam in Holland. As a global-leading provider of content protection technology, Irdeto is committed to designing, developing and marketing the end-to-end solutions to content protection and management that are designed to prevent the illegal content reception of TV and broadcasting under mobile and wideband environments.

Since Irdeto’s entry into the Chinese market in 1998, we have only recruited employees with adequate working experience but Keane was an exception—he just completed his graduate program when he applied for a position at Irdeto. After I gave Keane the first interview, the Beijing-based system architect immediately gave him the second interview. After passing two most rigorous interviews, the line manager of Client Team flew from Holland to Beijing to gave Keane a third interview, at the end of which he gave Keane the job offer right away. Keane overwhelmed us with his outstanding qualities—his professional knowledge and expertise, excellence English speaking and listening abilities, and superb interpersonal communication.

Through self-education within only two weeks, Keane grasped the basic knowledge in digital TV and about the CA (conditional access) module that he was to work on. As an engineer of the client terminal development, Keane was responsible for the development and maintenance of two key products SoftCell and Embedded CA Task. He fully demonstrated his strong programming ability with C/C++ in the embedded development. Just after entering Irdeto for one month, he faced a major challenge—to fix a bug (hot Fix) for South Korea’s TuMedia Company. Keane diagnosed the problem as possibly connected with memory leak. A careful examination of the codes indeed revealed that a section of code did not set the pointer memory free. After repairing, he tested it on the set-top boxes by different manufacturers. Debugging the Hot Fix in a short time not only won the client positive comments but also helped establish Keane’s technical reputation within the company.

For Keane, the real challenge came in Sept. 20XX with the LPPV (Local Pay Per View) Project for Telecom Italia, which is a key application in the next-generation digital TV. Our center was to develop the Set-Top Box (STB) software. Under the guidance of Dutch system architect on system design, Keane independently finished the component design, coding, unit testing, and text preparation of two separate modules at the client team. In the process, Keane showed great work ethics and the capacity to withstand stress. In order to deliver the software before the fixed date, Keane worked with a testing engineer till two o’clock the next morning on the second day of China’s Spring Festival, the most important holiday of the year. The testing by the System Test Team in Holland indicated that there were virtually no bugs in Keane’s modules. Keane then helped with the integration of the ADB set-top box. Since the middle stage of the project, Keane practically assumed the role of a project manager, communicating with the program manager and product manager of the Dutch team, who evaluated Keane’s work very highly.

What is more valuable is Keane’s capacity for innovation. Keane suggested the use of Tag-Length-Value(TLV) as the output format for the smartcard so that the modules developed by the architect and the head-end team and the smartcard team in Holland can be better coordinated, a proposal which we readily accepted. He further proposed an innovative solution about smartcard simulator which allowed a new way of testing when client team does not have a real smart card, an innovation which was readily recognized by the technical lead at Dutch headquarters.

In those two years, Keane’s remarkable improvement in soft skills, especially communication skills, has contributed importantly to his many project successes. Our Beijing Center has to collaborate and exchange closely with our international counterparts for the impletion of a common project. In each of the projects, Keane would have regular weekly teleconference with engineers in Holland and Australia. At the most critical moments, such teleconference would be held every half an hour. On all those occasions, Keane could always come up with his own perspectives, express them fully and articulately, and raise constructive opinions. In an employee English proficiency assessment by Wall Street English Training Company, Keane was ranked top 2, second only to an engineer from Canada.

Keane’s outstanding team spirit is also impressive. In the DigiTurk project for a Turkish company, Keane was the specialist on Embedded CA Task Module, a position which required him to develop a CA Glue Midware software together with the implementer of the OpenTV midware. Keane took the initiative to finish most of the software development that ensured the successful completion of the project. In addition, in one of the Survival Skills Expansion Trainings that we organized in the suburban area, there was an “Sea Escape” event involving 15 members. Keane was the first to raise his hand to indicate that he would the last to get over a high wall, which meant taking much more risks. His belief was that the success of a whole team is much more valuable and that personal sacrifices can be made for the interest of the whole group.

I still remember that when Keane decided to leave our company, the Irdeto’s country manager said to Keane that he sincerely hoped Keane would return to Irdeto someday in the near future. As far as I know, this is quite rare at Irdeto. Now, as I learn his plan to seek a graduate program in financial engineering, which lays great emphasis on IT technology, I believe that his strong IT backgrounds, plus his equally strong caliber in mathematics, will definitely boost his successful completion of your premier program.

Yours sincerely

Peter XX

Director of Irdeto Beijing Development Center
