Date of Birth (DD/MM/YY): xx/xx / xxxx         Applicant ID ( If known):

MSc Finance and Economics (2nd choice)

1/ Name of referee; 2/ Current position; 3/ Current institution

My name is XXX and my current position is vice president of Department of Accounting, Nanjing University of Finance and Economics. Our institution is a leading university in the teaching and research of finance and accountancy and Miss XX xx, for whom I would like to offer my most unreserved endorsement of her application for your Master’s program, has received first-rate education at our university and with her distinguished performance in the first two years was qualified for a highly competitive yet most rewarding joint degree programme at the University of XXX in the UK. She has maintained a top-level academic excellence and this unique outstanding academic foundation makes her most prepared for your Master’s programme, however challenging it might be.

4/ How is the applicant known to you? 5/ How long have you known the applicant?

I made my acquaintance with Miss XXX as I was administrator of students’ academics and also had the honor of teaching her a core course—Accounting Basics—during the first academic year. In addition, toward the end of the second academic year, I was in charge of administering the entire screening process for students to undertake their “2 plus 2” joint programme at the University of XXX in the UK. Over the past three years, I have been following her growth closely; therefore, my understanding of Miss XXX is comprehensive and my description of her performance should lend considerable weight to strengthen her application.

6/ Has the applicant discussed his/her motivation for the proposed programme of study with you?

This summer vacation, as the applicant was to complete her final year in the UK, she returned to China and paid a visit to me at the Department. In requesting for my recommendation, she had a thorough discussion with me about her motivation for the proposed programme of study. It is her belief that her undergraduate programme, essential as it is, has only given her fundamental academic training, which is far from enough for meeting the increasing challenges of the rapidly changing business world tomorrow. By studying in the UK, she has benefited immeasurably in terms of knowledge expansion and learning skills and her academic potential expects to be continually maximized. She would like to follow a career path of working as a senior financial professional at a leading multinational company based in China and a Master’s degree programme from a leading UK institution is imperative so that she can acquire advanced knowledge and skills to cope with the complicated tasks at such a workplace.

7/ How well do you know the applicant’s academic work? 8/If your university does not supply transcripts, please comment specifically on the courses taken by the applicant and the grades attained. 9/ What is/was the language of instruction?

Regarding Miss XXX’s academic work, I would describe it as highly commendable. During the two years at our university, she earned a total of 107.5 credits, with an average grade of 90.8/100, which ranked her among the top 3% in the entire department. Her distinguished academic performance led to her winning top-level university scholarship and the honor of meritorious student for two consecutive years. As her academic transcript can show, she has taken a whole gamut of basic and specialized courses which have contributed to a solid and systematic knowledge base which allows her for more advanced studies. As many of our faculty are scholars with educational backgrounds in the West, the education at our university involves extensive use of English as language of instruction. When she was just a freshman, she obtained exceedingly high scores in College English Test (Level IV & VI) and IELTS (7.5). That’s why the applicant has very good English proficiency which has enabled her to excel, without any language barrier whatsoever, in an all-English academic environment at the University of Exeter.

10/ Relative to other students from the same university and following the same degree programme, please indicate an overall assessment of the applicant’s ranking in class; please indicate if the ranking system is formal or informal.

Based on a formal overall assessment of the applicant’s ranking in class, I would evaluate the applicant as the following:

Top 5% Top 10% Top 25% Top 50% Bottom 50% Unable to comment
        Academic Performance
        Intellectual Ability
        Capacity for original thinking
        Motivation for further study
        Written and oral communication skills

11/ In your opinion how well does the applicant’s studies to date equip him or her to follow the chosen programme of study at LSE? You might wish to comment on the applicant’s: writing skills; analytical skills; presentation skills; quantitative skills (if relevant to programme)

Miss XXX’ studies to date have equipped her perfectly for her chosen programme of study. For one thing, she has consistently majored in accounting and finance and therefore her undergraduate background is seamlessly integrated with her proposed programme. The two universities she has been attending in China and the UK are both outstanding universities, thus putting her on a firm footing for challenging studies at an even more prestigious university like yours. Throughout her studies so far, Miss XXX has demonstrated academic curiosity rare among her peers, which has motivated her to study with tremendous individual initiative and commitment.

At our university, students are required to submit term papers for most of courses, in which the applicant has exhibited remarkable abilities in perceptive analysis, substantiated by concrete statistics and insightful reasoning. Her papers were always well-organized, with clear logic, convincing analysis, and original idea. In many of group projects, she used to act as team leader and her effective and productive leadership was the guarantee for the great success in each project. Most importantly, she often represented her group to deliver presentations. In those projects and presentations, there were always major difficulties to overcome. Her responsible attitude could always enable her to do wonderful process management and to come up with the best results among all the groups. For example, in the presentation for the Auditing course, she used well-designed and detailed PPT and persuasive arguments to win 89/100 for the presentation, the highest score in the class.

With respect to quantitative skills, Miss XXX has taken such courses as calculus, statistics, linear algebra, probability and mathematical statistics, with grades ranging from 93/100 to 98/100. Her strong quantitative skills are further evidenced in her score in the GMAT’s quantitative section, which is 50/92%. Quantitative caliber is an essential skill for accounting and finance and Miss XXX has a remarkable advantage in this regard.

12/ To your knowledge does the applicant have any work experience relevant to this application?

To my knowledge, the applicant does not have any formal work experience; nevertheless, she has taken conscientious steps to accumulate industry experiences by undertaking useful internships during vacations. She interned at the Credit and Loan Department of XXX Bank (Suzhou), and Finance Department of XXX Electronics and Speciality Gases (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. Most of the responsibilities she performed during her internships are highly relevant to accounting and corporate finance and those real-world experiences have obviously heightened her understanding of the financial industry and the profession of accounting and auditing, apart from honing her skills in dealing with practical issues. I am sure that she has thus been made fully prepared for a career path in the booming financial sector of the country.

13/ To your knowledge does the applicant have any other qualifications relevant to this application?

A crucial qualification of the applicant is perhaps her strong skills in computer application. Each semester students were required to take computerized lab work for several accounting courses in which they had to develop a diversity of accounting statements including the balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement by following strict accounting principles, standards and statistics. She invariably obtained high grades in those courses, testifying her strong ability to apply knowledge to solving difficult problems.

14/ Do you have any other comments on this applicant’s application to LSE for graduate study?

I would like to comment on the applicant as strongly motivated, highly qualified, and fully prepared. With well-defined academic and professional objectives, she is ready to make utmost efforts to become a financial specialist. Her parents, who both work in the financial sector, have discussed the applicant’s aspirations with me in considerable detail and have indicated their high expectations of the applicant’s future. They are most proud of the applicant and are prepared to give all the necessary support to the applicant to help her fulfill her goals. Therefore, the applicant has all the necessary conditions to excel in your outstanding programme and your acceptance of her application would help make her dream come true.
