for Transferring to the University of Pennsylvania

Applicant: Chen Zhenkun

A newcomer in this thriving world of economic development at the time I came to the US from China, I knew nothing more appropriate for me than computer science. Therefore, I chose the major of computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I should say that I have been doing very well in the past semester. I had the honor of receiving the Apple Student Scholarship and attending the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference. However, these honors are only a medal for my past and never hold back my pursuit of my new ideal for life of becoming a successful businessman.

My interest in the field of economics germinated during a period of peculiar actual experience of on-line commodity deal on eBay. Being in the US not so long, I was still new to on-line trading, a novelty to me but already so popular here. Out of curiosity, I decided to have a close contact with it. A brand-new laptop computer the price of which is almost half the market price caught my eye. However, after I remitted with high expectation US$1900, the money I saved by pinching and scraping for quite some time, I received nothing but endless waiting and despair in the end. This unfortunate experience did not drag me away from on-line trading, though. On the contrary, I became more interested in it. I decided resolutely to recover my loss and earn money through on-line trading. Therefore, I began to study the theories of economics by myself.

Among all the theories of economics I studied from the elective courses I selected, the one influenced me the most is the Price Discrimination theory in microeconomics. I found that many products could be sold at a higher price on eBay UK and bring about a considerable profit. Therefore, I began to buy in commodities at relatively lower prices and then resell them on eBay UK. From cheap odds and ends at the beginning to large items worth thousands of dollars, and from a few sentences of introduction at the start to using the service of a popular auction webpage design company in producing eye-catching advertisements, my profit was higher and higher and I was selling a more diverse varieties of products. After a procession of failures and successes, I have found myself in deep in love with the mysterious science of economics before I knew. And at the same time, I have found in myself the keenness and decision-making ability of a shrewd businessman.

I studied more elective courses including "The Principle of Macroeconomics" and read a large amount of economics works and journals after class and began to focus on training my ways of thinking and analysis in economics. Through my studies, I learnt more principles of market and which factors drive people, seller and consumer, to make decision on the market. Economics has equipped me with an eye to see through complex market behaviors. I have become simply obsessed with this.

It is during this period that I made a decision to give up computer science and transfer to economics. This puzzled many others. This is no doubt a big challenge for me. However, it is my character to meet head-on with challenges in the face of difficulties. I believe the University of Pennsylvania will be a starting point for my new dream just as the dream I had when I concealed the admission notice of Peking University and came alone to the States.

I firmly believe you will help me to make my dream true because, first of all, your university enjoys a long and high esteem in the field of economics. With your beautiful campus, advanced education infrastructure and first-class faculty, the University of Pennsylvania will provide me with an excellent study and living environment. Second, I yearn for your diverse cultural atmosphere. I will have the opportunity to learn from masterminds in the field of economics from all over the world and study together with gifted students from different international cultural backgrounds. What attract me the most are the courses you offer that cover almost all areas of economics and the wide variety of opportunities for practice. These will be very helpful for me to fulfill my study plan, to establish for myself a complete theoretical framework of economics and to accumulate hands-on experience. I hope your university will witness the growth of a highly self-motivated young scholar who aspires to make himself a legend in the roaring waves of market economy.
