ESSAY 6:Discuss your
interest in international studies and business
。How might this degree program in liberal arts,
language and business help met you goal?(500 words)
(The Huntsman Program in International Studies
& Business is Penn's 40 course unit, joint
degree, undergraduate program in business, language
and liberal arts.)
My love for foreign languages and success in
learning them have worked together in the stimulation
of my interest in the joint degree of Huntsman
Program.
Dongbei Yucai School---the best middle school
in Shenyang---has provided me with first-rate
conditions for foreign language study. Consequently,
while still a third-grader of junior middle school
in 2000, I passed the CET4 (College English Test
Band Four), which is a required examination for
all college undergraduates before their graduation.
This success has encouraged me enormously in
my foreign language studies. On graduation, I
was offered two choices without entrance exams:
either to go to the senior middle school famous
for training contestants in science competitions,
or go to the foreign languages school newly established
to suit the situation of internalization. Due
to my success in CET4 and the greatest likelihood
of China's entrance into the WTO, I chose the
latter without any hesitations.
I have kept the momentum of success in senior
middle school. In 2001 when I was still a second-year
student I was awarded the honorable prize in the
Ninth National English Proficiency Competition
for School Students, in which I ranked the seventh
among 80,000 students from almost 1,000 middle
schools in the city in which I lived.
I started learning Japanese the moment I entered
the Foreign Languages School. In the second year
I passed the internationally authorized test of
Japanese Language Proficiency band 2, which means
I already had the same language competence as
those native Japanese students in senior middle
school. On account of all my achievements in the
past, my teachers have unanimously acknowledged
my competence in foreign languages.
A good command of foreign languages has enabled
me to communicate with foreign visitors, teachers
and classmates. Once a visitor from South Korea
lost his way and luckily I was able to help him
because we both speak Japanese. This kind of communications
has widened my vision and aroused my interest
in international studies.
China's ultimate entrance into the WTO is a cogent
manifestation of my wisdom in choosing to study
foreign languages. Besides, it demands more from
today's youths. To meet the requirements of international
contact, one must have professional knowledge
besides foreign languages. That is why I have
aimed at learning international business. I think
I am qualified for that considering my advantage
in language learning and my ability in organization,
which is fully displayed in my daily activities.
Thanks to my father's professional experience
of business and his constant teaching, I have
already acquired the elementary knowledge of this
field. The most important thing I have learned
is that unlike established and rigid rules and
formulas, business is noted for incessant changes.
To gain the practical know-how, I worked in a
computer company during my summer vacation. I
found that a printer would sell at 680 Yuan by
cash but at 690 Yuan on account day of the computer
market. The loss of temporary profits guaranteed
the circulation of fund. This kind of knowledge
picked up outside class fills me with amazement
and fun.
I know that to be a successful businessman, I
need to broaden my learning in addition to the
knowledge of business. The liberal arts course
of Huntsman Program offers me this opportunity.
I believe that it will pave the way for my future
success in international business and communications
in the rapid economic development after China's
entrance into the WTO.
