Statement of Purpose
Applicant: xx   Program: Master’s in Finance (The xx School of International Management)

Finance as an academic discipline has gained increasing momentum of development over the past decades as a response to the increasingly complicated global and regional financial markets. Innovative theories and practices, such as the portfolio theory and capital assets pricing model (CAPM), have emerged in quick succession to meet the diverse financial challenges of the world. As the global economy grows, the capital market plays an indispensable and sometimes even a decisive role. Those international developments have special implications for China’s economy and its financial industry, as China is to completely open its financial market to the rest of the world by 2005 under the WTO framework.

As a student of finance from xx University, China’s top 5th university, I can readily interpret the implications as both opportunities and challenges for China’s financial sector. On my personal level, I feel nothing more exciting than opportunities and challenges not only in my academic but also in my future professional career. I believe that to meet challenges, we have to make the best use of the opportunities.

One of the important opportunities that I can avail myself of is the Master’s program at xx, the xx School of International Management. I believe that, on the verge of completing my undergraduate program, your Master’s program would be most appropriate for me to ascend onto a heightened academic level that may equip me with the knowledge and problem-solving skills necessary to become a well-trained and productive financial professional in tomorrow’s financial world in China. As the world’s first school of international management and most experienced in developing successful business leaders, your business school is the ideal institution for quality graduate education on the part of aspiring students including me.

I deem myself a worthy prospective member of your student community because I have all the important qualifications for pursuing your well-respected program. The most important reason for such a confidence is perhaps my deep-entrenched interest in finance. Born in xx, the hub of the country’s textile industry, I grew up in a family dealing in textile import and export business and I have been long exposed to and trade and business and to the importance of finance in business management. Through my undergraduate education, this interest has been further strengthened and my understanding of finance as an academic discipline has been significantly enhanced both in depth and in breadth.

My education at the Department of International Finance, one of the strongest faculties in xx University, has been exceedingly rewarding. In the first two years, I studied supporting courses for finance and in advanced mathematics, laying a foundation of core courses in finance. Since my sophomore year, my academic performance demonstrated remarkable improvement as I got adjusted to the competitive academic environment and realized the importance of the core subjects. I have been most enthusiastic about such courses as corporation finance, security investment, futures and futures rights, investment bank management and merchant bank management. I have excelled in all of them, and they are all highly relevant to the program offered by your Department.

I have been most enlightened by the book Mean-Variance Analysis in Portfolio Choice and Capital Market by Harry M. Markowitz, Nobel laureate for economics, whose portfolio theory produced a monumental impact in finance, especially in security investment. By shifting focus to empirical study and to quantitative analysis, Markowitz’s theory laid an important groundwork for capital assets pricing model by William F. Sharp. It sensitized me to the essence of investment—instead of relying on mere luck and chances, successful investment is the result of sound academic approaches and judgment, as well as the use of effective financial tools to avoid financial risks. It has further inspired me to pursue advanced studies in investment in the United States, the country which is the center of the most robust investment activities in the world.

My study of finance has always been accompanied with a well-defined objective—to learn useful knowledge and to hone practical skills. Therefore, apart from achieving an ever ascending GPA (from 3.0 through 3.12 to 3.33 over the past three years), I have endeavored to apply my knowledge to practice by seeking various internship opportunities. During summer and winter vacations from 2002 to 2004, I interned at xx City Merchant Bank where I familiarized myself with the basic workflow of a commercial bank, at xx Company of xx Province’s xx City where I learned financial management, and at xx Investment Co.Ltd. of xx Province where I analyzed statistics of the futures market. From July to August this year, I interned at xx Company (xx Branch) where I became familiar with the procedures of international trade. Those experiences helped me gain insights into many important aspects of China’s economy and its financial market.

With my accumulated knowledge of finance and of China’s financial realities, I am undertaking my graduation thesis entitled xx in which I address such topics as how the futures trade in national debts can stimulate China’s financial market, what are the lessons to be drawn from the previous attempt at the futures trade in national debts, and how the construction of a healthy supervisory system consisting of stringent market standards and regulations would ensure the successful operation of the trade. I have done extensive review of the relevant literature and have collected abundant statistics and materials. Under the supervisor of my advisor Prof. xx, I will significantly improve my research skills through this formal treatise.

As China is to open its financial and capital market under the framework of WTO agreement in 2005, I am to pursue my advanced study in finance at my target university. This is largely a pure coincidence; but I can derive special implications from those two apparently unrelated events. China is ready to be receptive to international inputs while international financial institutions are ready to partake of China’s rapidly expanding financial market with their mature and advanced concepts and practices. My personal undertakings come in between this national and international interactivity. I believe this interactivity should be dynamic, requiring some sort of bridging. My learning finance at the xx is exactly motivated by this desire to cultivate international perspectives in the service of China’s financial industry.

Apart from xx’s pioneering heritage, your program attracts me for another unique reason—its international character. Your unique curriculum combines more than 60 cutting-edge global business courses with international, cross-cultural studies. With your program having affiliations on every content, your student and faculty community come from more than 60 countries and active alumni network extend to 135 countries. This will allow me to acquire an international lifelong experience nowhere to be sought. This international orientation is perfectly in keeping with the international perspectives and experiences I wish to acquire, as my future professional career is definitely to happen in an international context. Hence, my most dedicated application to your world class program.
