Three
reasons stand behind my wish to study in the UK. First,
Britain boasts the leading educational system in the world,
characterized by state-of-art facilities and advanced teaching
strategies. Second, British education attaches great importance
to theoretical foundation, the latest and practical technology.
This ensures that I can apply my knowledge immediately after
I return to China. Finally, British education is reputed
for the fusion of coursework with presentations. This allows
students to bring into full play of their initiative and
to improve their problem-solving ability. What I benefit
from such an education is not simply knowledge, but more
importantly, a new mode of thinking, of analysis and problem-solving
strategies.
A British
education will be vitally important to my personal and career
development as I am to concentrate on three particular areas
The first is Public Health (in Developing Countries). At
China National Communication and Education Center for Family
Planning where I am working, I am involved in health education,
an important part of public health. As my undergraduate
program specialized in clinical medicine, it is necessary
for me to develop sufficient knowledge in policies of public
health, health administration, preventive medicine and health
project management in order to prove competent for my work.
My second
concentration is AIDS Prevention and in this regard UCL's
STIS & HIV program will satisfy my academic needs. Centered
exclusively around AIDS, the program offers a comprehensive
spectrum of specialized courses in health administration
of AIDS, clinical diagnosis and therapy, laboratory screening,
virology, health education. I will develop an overall knowledge
of AIDS and will be better equipped to provide services
to the public when I undertake AIDS prevention education,
a job that I have been doing over the past 4 years.
Nutrition
Science is my third area of concentration. The Center has
adopted my proposal that a nutrition consultation department
be set up to provide consulting services ranging from pregnancy
and reproduction nutrition, infant nutrition, adolescent
nutrition, to senescence nutrition. I have been put in charge
of the Department because of my medical background.
I have
every reason to believe that I will contribute significantly
to my organization. Established in 1997 as the first program
sponsored by United Nation's Population Foundation and directly
affiliated to China National Population and Family Planning
Commission, the Center is a multimedia health education
organization (encompassing TV, broadcasting, website, Internet,
publication, exhibition, consultation, hotline and magazine)
maintaining sound working relations with international organization,
winning “Global Media Award for Best Combined Media Effort”.
Within next five to ten years, the Center plans to develop
into a modernized international health education center.
Toward such an objective, the Center must be operated according
to advanced international health administration standards
and professionals with both medical knowledge and administrative
skills are needed. Among all the workers at this Center,
only three have professional medical background. It is obvious
that I have a major role to play in the future development
of the Center. Upon completion my studies in the UK and
returning to China, I plan to set up advanced training programs
in AIDS prevention or nutrition consultation at national
and provincial levels. My international perspectives and
experiences will not simply become my personal assets. They
will also be useful in making my organization professional,
efficient, and international.
