By democratic
election in 2001, I became vice chairman of the Youth League
of our Center vested with the real power as the chairman
was soon to resign because of his age. It was not long before
I took concrete steps to reform the League Branch and its
work. I started conceptualizing exciting and meaningful
events in order to obtain full participation of all the
members and to increase the cohesion of the branch as an
organization.
The
most important event I led my League Branch to undertake
was the AIDS and HIV education on university campuses. Though
Chinese universities and colleges carry out some form of
adolescent education, a large part of it is through Peer
Education and as sexual behavior has never been publicly
acknowledged as factual, college students had insufficient
knowledge about contraception (especially about emergency
contraception) and related knowledge about AIDS. But I believed
that the students had the right and the necessity to receive
comprehensive education about AIDS.
Based
on a very detailed proposal that I formulated, we named
our education campaign AIDS Prevention on Campus and we
started our campaign in Peking University. In the students'
living quarters we held exhibitions, distributed free leaflets,
and offered lectures and consultations. The event was widely
welcomed by students. The students unions of various colleges
and universities in Beijing and throughout the country contacted
us, wishing to share our successful experiences and collaborate
with us to launch this campaign on their own campuses. As
the campaign was the first of its kind in China, major media
of the country gave it extensive coverage and in the wake
of it the topic of How to Carry Out AIDS Education in Universities
became a nationwide concern. Because of our pioneering work,
our League Branch was awarded the Model League Branch of
the Year by the government.
What
I gained from this experience is that, first, as the leader
of a project, a person must have original ideas and pioneering
spirit so that freshness and new value can be added to the
activity which is undertaken and the initiative of team
members can be brought into full play. Second, a team leader
must exercise effective leadership and should constantly
evaluate successes and failures to make continuous improvements
and progress. Finally, teamwork is also an important key
to success. As long as I keep those three crucial factors
in mind, I can lead my League members to contribute to society
in a multiplicity of ways.
