Dear
Sir or Madam:
As
a senior professor of the Institute of Building Environment
and Equipment Engineering of Tsinghua University as well
as supervisor of Miss X’s Master program, I have an intimate
knowledge of her intellectual aptitudes and research achievements.
A student with tremendous potential, she is definitely one
of my favorite students.
I made
my acquaintance with Miss X in 2000 when she was just a
junior undergraduate. When Prof. XXX, a colleague of mine
and a supervisor of Ph. D. programs in thermal energy, reported
that a woman student named XX from our institute achieved
the unprecedented high score of 99/100 in Heat Transfer,
a course that he taught, I was deeply impressed. This 5-credit
course is notorious for its difficulty, the average score
being only 80/100. I immediately recruited her into my Indoor
Air Quality (IAQ) Research Group and that was the first
time when I ever recruited an undergraduate.
At the
regular meetings of IAQ Group, Miss X demonstrated impressive
enthusiasm for scientific research. As an undergraduate,
she also exhibited powerful comprehension—she could understand
the core of others’ researches very quickly. When she was
a senior, I assigned her to collaborate with my doctorial
student Mr. XXX on the project of studying the numerical
solution of the VOC emission. Within one month, she completed
the modeling of individual emission source and debugged
the entire program. In addition, they conducted interior
multi-source & multi-汇 studies.
In 2001,
Miss X’s thesis entitled Research on the Numerical Modeling
of Interior VOCs Emission was rated as the best-written
thesis of her specialty. A paper she co-authored with Mr.
XXX was accepted for publication in 2002 by Atmospheric
Environment, which can now be indexed by SCI. It has been
rare for an undergraduate to have publications in our department.
In 2001, Miss X’s outstanding academic performance was
paid off—she was allowed to undertake her Master’s program
waived of entrance examination. I became her supervisor.
During
her Master’s program, Miss X has further impressed me with
her innovative spirit and rigorous analysis. In Sept. 2001,
just after the new semester began, Miss X told with me that
a large quantity of technical literature she consulted during
the summer vacation could not really uncover the essentials
of the building materials’ VOCs emission because those
literature ignored a lot of important factors due to mathematical
oversimplification. She discussed with me the possibility
of constructing a more universally applicable model and
I encouraged her to have a try by procuring for her the
sponsorship from China National Natural Science Foundation.
Nevertheless, I had my own worries because the research
required strong analytical ability, strong mathematical
background, as well as computer programming and application
skills. Miss X did not disappoint me. Within two months,
she presented me with not only the research findings in
written form but also a complete set of calculating programs
and results. Based on this, we carried out further studies,
ranging from the emission characteristics, simulation formulae
, error analysis to the effect of various factors. At present,
Miss X is constructing the experiment chamber to perform
research on simulation experiments and on the parameters
of the emission characteristics of the building materials.
In terms
of the publication of research papers over the past two
years, Miss X has been far ahead of her classmates. As far
as I know, three of her papers have been indexed by SCI(another
has been accepted to be published), one is indexed by EI,
four at international conferences, several at domestic conferences
and academic journals. In addition, the paper she presented
(in collaboration with other authors) won China HVAC 2002
National Excellent Treatise Award. I believe she has unlimited
research potential and the sheer volume of her publication
is rather phenomenal.
In 2002,
Miss X served as my teaching assistant on two courses—Specialized
English and Mass Transfer in Building Equipment. This allowed
me to discover another important quality in her—dedication.
She gave lively lessons, answered questions clearly and
patiently, corrected assignments and administered tests
responsibly.
Miss
X’s outstanding academic performance has qualified her
for a direct Ph. D. program and it has been my strong hope
that she can embark on the program under my direction. But
I sincerely respect her decision for a Ph. D. program at
your esteemed university and am happy to see her pursue
her ideals and broaden her horizons for the purpose of self-actualization.
Therefore I recommend her most strongly, under the conviction
that her rigorous thinking and powerful research capability
will prove that she is a worthy member of your program.
Yours
Sincerely
XX

Dear
Admissions Officer:
The
Department of Building Science of School of Architecture,
Tsinghua University, is one of the most authoritative, stringent
and vigorous teaching and research centers in China. In
the field of Building Environment and Equipment Engineering,
it is the leading institution in the country. As dean of
the department, I deem it a pleasure to support my former
student Miss XX in her application for a Ph.D. program in
Building Science and Engineering at your prestigious university.
It
is unanimously agreed that over the past few years Miss
X has been the model of excellence of our department, a
student who has been given a spate of honors and awards,
making outstanding achievements in both her academic studies
and research. In 2001, she left me a truly deep impression
at her oral defense of her Bachelor’s thesis, at which
I acted as the chairman of the academic panel. The fact
that she was able to achieve very important research results
in the course of two months, as well as her distinctive
ability to analyze and solve practical problems, her quick-wittedness,
broad perspectives, solid academic foundation, and her oral
expressiveness, all impressed the members of the panel.
Winning a score of 95/100 for her thesis, she was the top-ranking
student in her specialty that year. .
Later,
I acquired closer understanding of Miss X, especially her
research and development ability, her professional commitment
and teamwork. In 2002, at the recommendation of Prof. XXX,
the supervisor of Miss X’s Master’s program, she became
a member in the a project sponsored by UTRC(UTRC, United
Technologies Research Center of U.S.A), a project under
my direction. The project was to develop a software package
for building simulation and equipment assessment. The software
should be able to perform all-year simulation of a building’s
thermal and humid environments and the level of interior
organic pollutants based on local models. At the same time,
it should carry out all-year simulation evaluation of the
operations of the equipment including the heat-humidity
processing facilities and air-purification facilities. To
successfully complete the task, cooperation and coordination
among teammates were essential because different modules
should be well integrated. She and six teammates were responsible
for VOCs module, thermal environment module, humid environment
module, equipment module, and zonal module. They worked
hard and in close collaboration to make the project a major
success. In particular, toward the end of the research,
many technical problems occurred in the integration between
her VOCs module and the zonal module by another teammate.
They debugged their programs together and worked around
the clock to ensure that the entire project met the deadline
for final acceptance test. When presenting the software
for the evaluation of experts, she explained all the applications
of the software, winning praises from American experts.
Based
on my understanding of Miss X in those instances and many
more, I believe that she is bound to make further achievements
in her future studies and research. As the dean of the department,
I feel proud for our having developed such an outstanding
student. I recommend her with a strong sense of pride and
I am sure she will make important contributions to your
well-respected program.
Yours
Sincerely

Dear
Sir or Madam:
As
one of the most renowned designers of air-conditioning system
in China, The Building Environment Company of Tsinghua Tongfang
Co. Ltd. has contracted to design large-scale air-conditioning
or ventilating systems for numerous customers, including
the State Council, China Central Television Station (CCTV),
and a grand mosque in Iran. As a result, the Company has
ever been picked out for praise by Mr. XX, the former President
of China. Impressed by Miss XX’s outstanding expertise,
skills, and characters displayed during her internship in
our Company, I consider it a great honor to have this opportunity
to recommend her to you.
As
a project manager of the Company, I have acquired a profound
understanding of this hardworking and enterprising girl
during our cooperation. From July to August of 2002, Miss
X and I have participated in the air-conditioning system
reconstruction project of the New Hongqiao Building in Shanghai.
As soon as we were informed of the mission, she went to
communicate with the maintenance crew and residents (which
includes Japanese Consulate) of the Building, obtained comprehensive
information concerning the Building’s ventilation, water,
and heating systems, and made the test plans promptly. Courageous
and cautious throughout the tests, Miss X has taken the
lead and attended to everything. She has been scrupulous
about every detail, whether on the top of the cooling tower
many meters’ high, or in the air unit of merely three cubic
meters, or in front of the computer processing data. I have
been deeply touched by such incredible work performance
of a seemingly delicate girl.
During
her internship, she has displayed admirable analytical ability
and practical competence. After more than one month’s test,
they finally located the key problem of energy consumption
in the operation of air-conditioners and put forward a perfect
reconstruction plan, thus providing clear-cut guidance for
subsequent reconstruction. At the completion of the project,
their effort has enabled us to accomplish the goal of reducing
yearly energy consumption by 300,000 Yuan.
Miss
X is also a girl with a strong sense of responsibility.
Her team, composed of 2 graduate students and eight undergraduates,
was responsible for the test, evaluation and analysis of
yearly energy consumption of the whole air-conditioning
system. As head of the team, she has not only coordinated
the work of the team, but also taught personally the undergraduates
how to use the instruments. What’s more, as the only female
in the team, she has taken care of her fellow team members’
daily life. I’ve been deeply impressed by her spirit of
teamwork.
As
a specialist in building environment, I am keenly aware
of the gap of China’s building science and technology as
compared with advanced international standards and have
accordingly long felt the urgent need for China to learn
the advanced foreign technology. If excellent youth with
both gifts and initiatives like Miss XX are able to further
their studies abroad, China will have more talents in its
development in this field in the future.
Sincerely
yours,
XXX
