As the
Director of the Department of Computer Sciences of Wuhan
University of Technology, which is one of the most prestigious
engineering universities in China, I deem it a pleasure
to recommend W.Y., one of the outstanding students in our
department for admission and assistantship you're your graduate
program.
Since
his enrollment into our department with remarkable entrance
scores, W.Y. has embodied the fine character of strong inquisition
and industriousness in learning, which has gained him significant
academic success during his college years. I am aware of
his distinctive academic performance as reflected in his
transcripts. He maintains a very high GPA that places him
in the top 5% out of 150 through the past 3 years, winning
scholarships of the department almost every year. In the
College English Speech Contest organized by the Teaching
Committee of Hubei Province, he excelled most of other contestants,
winning the first prize in the Region-wide preliminary contest,
and the third prize in the final of the provincial level,
being the sole participant representing our university.
I have
also discovered him to be perseverant and enthusiastic in
studies and extracurricular activities. During the Military
Life Experiencing period, a compulsory training program
for all Chinese college freshmen upon their immediate entrance,
he was granted the title of Excellent Trainee thanks to
his painstaking training efforts, though the training was
extraordinarily rigorous and demanding. In the past college
years, he has enthusiastically taken part in many students'
societies, such as Computer Society, Road to American English
and Literature Garden, etc, which has both seen his versatility
and organizing ability by serving in quite a few positions.
Speaking
of his organizing ability, I have to mention two well-known
events under his active involvement and organization. One
is the College Computer Festival of Hubei Province and the
other is the Science and Culture Week of our school. In
the first one, he was one of the chief representatives from
our department to undertake this provincial level activity.
His enthusiastic involvements in liaison, coordination and
the contestants' performance evaluation had won him the
honorable title of Active Organizing Participant specially
granted by our department for this important occasion. In
the second one of Science and Culture Week, organized in
our school in 1999, he was a chief organizer. And it was
so successful that it attracted more than one thousand students
to participate, who were all satisfied with this event for
the opportunity of a better understanding of the past and
future of science in China.
As the
Director, I am deeply impressed and moved by his capability
of organizing and his sense of involvement, which have been
explicitly demonstrated through all his participation in
these activities.
A bright
young man, with blazing intelligence, energy, and determination,
Mr. W.Y. deserves my first-rate recommendation. Thus, I
would unqualifiedly recommend him for admission into the
Ph D program at your university and I will appreciate your
sincere assistance to his admission.
Sincerely
yours,

Dear Colleagues:
Mr.
W.Y. has asked me to write him a recommendation letter.
I feel very privileged to do so to support his application
for advanced study in your department.
I first
became acquainted with Mr. W.Y. since 1999, when he began
to take my Physics Laboratory class. His ambitious motivation,
hard working, and creative thinking not only made him the
most excellent student in this class, but also made my teaching
much easier and more joyful, as he kept on helping the others
grasp the basics and experiences for scientific research
based on his own solid understanding and insight on our
projects.
Meticulously
observant and determinedly conscientious in the lab, Mr.
W.Y. has the most essential qualities to be a good researcher.
Every tiny detail in the experiments could not escape from
his acute observation, and for any anomaly he found, he
would try very hard to figure out the causes and fixed it
until he got caught in it. Further more, Mr. W.Y. went far
beyond simply analyzing the prescribed experiments. Instead,
he creatively treated each step of the experiment as a micro
scientific experiment upon which new theories could be established
and verified. It was really a pleasure to present his lab
reports in the class to let all the students enjoy his elegant
writing style and serious scientific attitude.
Besides
lab work, he also helped me about the lab chore, assuming
the responsibilities of a research assistant. Before any
experiment class, he would have the experiment equipments
prepared for me in the lab, and after the experiment he
would spend quite a long time checking the reports for accuracy
and meticulously organize them for my review. He was always
the last one to leave the lab, because he would make sure
that everything was all right in the lab for next experiment
and no possible dangers like explosions or fire would occur.
Based
on my appreciation of such a mature, ambitious and responsible
young man, I would very like to support his decision of
higher academic pursuit without reservation. And I sincerely
hope my recommendation will receive your favorable consideration
of his application for admission and financial support.
Yours Sincerely,

Dear Sir or Madam:
I am
very pleased to write this recommendation for Mr. W.Y. so
as to support his application for admission into your PhD
program and for your consideration of his financial support.
Mr.
W.Y. is a remarkable student in academic performance in
our department. Upon his request, I enrolled him into my
research team as my R.A. when he was still a junior, which
was an exception. This bold decision was justified by his
outstanding academic record during his first two years'
study. Working as my R.A., he has proved him to be a valuable
potential researcher with the qualities of self-motivation,
perseverance, modest and thirst for new information and
technology. Though lacking of experience at the beginning
compared with the other professionals in our team, he strove
to keep up with the research by eagerly absorbing all necessary
knowledge and constantly consulting other members with much
modest. Therefore, not long after he could conduct the experiments
without any assistance from the others working in the lab.
He even led the discussion of our journal club that he set
up from the very beginning in my lab, from which all of
us benefited a lot.
His
diligence and perseverance in our lab have paid off. Within
less than one year, he got involved and finished three of
my research projects:
1:
2:
3:
And he also took part in two published papers, one titled
XXXX, the other XXXX. This type of acclaim is normally reserved
for graduate students and I believe that this exemplifies
his commitment to furthering his education.
Besides
merits for scientific research, Mr. W.Y. also has a wonderful
personality. All of us around enjoy the acquaintance and
friendship from him. No matter as a teammate or a team leader,
he is always cooperative, considerate and eager to provide
help, making us feel so comfortable and confident to be
along with him, either for work or just for personal companion.
This
young man's professional qualities and personal character
have convinced me that he will have no trouble in succeeding
in any career that he chooses to pursue, given the opportunity
to have a try.
In short,
I am confident to assert that Mr. W.Y. has the potential
to distinguish himself as a successful researcher, and that
this potential will be sure to be fully caressed and exploited
if he can be accepted for further pursuit in this field
in your institution. I shall greatly appreciate it if you
will consider his application in light of this potential.
Yours Sincerely,
