Joe / Application for Gates Cambridge Trust Scholarship
I will
always keep in mind the motto ringing with essential truth
by Samuel Johnson that "Few things are impossible to
diligence and skill." Indeed, diligence and skill are
always closely related. Only by making tremendous labor
can one acquire sophisticated skills.
It was
from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications
(BUPT) in 1999 that I obtained my Bachelor's Degree in mechanical
electrical engineering and the subsidiary Bachelor's Degree
in communications engineering. For three years since my
graduation, I have been working at the Hutchison Optel Telecom
Technology Co., Ltd where I am responsible for the development
of optical communications projects. My 3-year undergraduate
studies and 3-year work experience have enabled me to develop
myself gradually into the leader of the present company's
IMTP Project Development Team. The 4-year undergraduate
efforts in my academic education resulted in a number of
honors and awards: Outstanding Graduate of the Year by Beijing
Education Committee (only given to the top 3 % of the graduates
in Beijing in that year), the SONY Scholarship by the same
Committee (only given to 100 most distinguished student
in Beijing in the year), the Second Prize of Beijing area
in 1998's SONY Cup National University and College Students
Electronic Design Competition, the MOTOROLA Scholarship
by my university in recognition for the top 10% best students
in each department, and the First Prize in an English Speech
Competition of our university. My undergraduate studies
helped me to lay a unusually solid theoretical foundation
for my future scientific research. Over the past 3 years
of project development, I have been able to accumulate considerable
practical experience. As chief coordinator of a cooperative
project between the Hutchison Optel Telecom Technology Co.,
Ltd and Nortel, I devoted my entire energy to the project
and gave up almost every weekend holiday. I am only confident
of my steadfastness and persistence because deep inside
me is the spirit to accept defeatism. Within 2-year period,
under my direction, our team successfully completed the
most important part in the IMTP Project, the designing of
the SDH/SONET Functional Module. It is my conviction that
only by relying on one's intelligence, industry, and cooperation
with teammates can one possibly arrive at true success.
Communications
and telecommunications have become absolutely indispensable
to our daily life. The communications network that is developing
most rapidly in the present-day world is based on photonic
communications transmission. My research interest focuses
on photonic communications network and the specialty that
I apply for is also the photonic communications system.
This is a subject which is technologically sophisticated
and updated. Its developments in recent years have exhibited
an alarmingly rapid trend. With the arrival of the information
age for human society, the demand for better and quicker
communications is becoming increasingly urgent. With its
huge frequency band resources and superior transmission
qualities, optical fiber becomes the ideal physical media
for realizing high-speed and voluminous transmission. With
the broad application of EDFA and the maturation of WDM
technology, a small optical fiber can transmit digital information
on the order of hundreds of Gbits to several Tbits. This
will create unlimited convenience and maximum speed for
man's information exchange and communication, producing
the most unprecedented impact on the improvement of people's
way of life. Based on the development of optical communications
technology, the optical transmission network technology,
optical internet technology, broadband integrated optical
interface technology will contribute to fulfill our dream
of being able to utilize so colorful a reservoir of information.
By then, the aim of making our planet into a village will
be ultimately and truly achieved. The optical communications
technology enjoys a prospect of limitless application and
tremendous potential for development. I believe that the
professional expertise acquired from my prospective degree
program at Cambridge University will benefit China in particular
and the world as a whole.
So far,
a total of 61 Nobel Prize winners have been born from Cambridge
University and Prof. WA Crossland is the reputed world-class
scientist in the field of Photonic System. It has been my
long-cherished dream to be able to study at Cambridge University
and under the supervision of Prof. WA Crossland. To receive
advanced education and to undertake in-depth research in
Photonic Communications has been my lifelong aspiration.
I would commit myself to them without any reservation. For
the first year of my degree program, I would like to complete
my studies for the Mphil degree and then proceed onto Ph.D.
in which I plan to embark on a comprehensive and systematic
research on Photonic Communications. I will coordinate and
collaborate closely with my future colleagues and under
the fruitful guidance of my supervisor I will choose a particular
subject in Photonic Communications for creative research,
a subject that can be conducive to the development of technology
and productivity.
It is
my most sincerely wish that I can be granted with Gates
Cambridge Trust Scholarship becauseit is virtually impossible
for me as an average individual in a developing country
to prepare on my own the full tuition that is required for
my education at Cambridge. Therefore, I hope that Gates
Cambridge Trust can lend me a helping hand by sponsoring
my future study and research. It is conceivable how important
such a financial aid would be to an aspiring young man like
me. My application for the scholarship is not entirely for
my own sake on the materialistic level because I believe
that the study and the research that can be made possible
by this scholarship will be of great importance to the development
of our human societies as a whole.
Recommendation
Letter
for Applying for Gates Cambridge Trust
Scholarship
Dear
Sir or Madam,
I'm
very glad to be informed that Mr. Joe has received the Matriculation
Admittance of your prestigious university. Not only himself
but also our teachers who taught him before are proud for
his precious opportunity to continue his study in such a
world-famed university
I
feel honored to recommend Mr. Joe to Gates Cambridge Trust
of Cambridge University. Beijing University of Posts and
Telecommunications where Mr. Tang graduated enjoys a high
reputation in the telecommunication domain in China, even
in the world. As the dean and chairman of the Degree Committee
of my department, I taught Mr. Tang Coding and Data Processing
as a compulsory course when he was a junior and later I
became his instructor of his graduate thesis. During Mr.
Tang's four-year study in the university, I was greatly
impressed by his unusual brightness and excellent talent.
I
remember that in the English Speech Contest held by our
university in 1996, Mr. Joe won the second prize. I awarded
him the prize because in the first three winners, he was
the only student of my department. I distinguished him by
his confident smile and fluent English speech. With a high
capability in many aspects, he became the major editor in
charge of the newspaper of my department when he was a sophomore,
which offered me more opportunities to know him.
In
teaching him Coding and Data Processing, I surprisingly
found that Mr. Tang had a strong thirsty for knowledge,
which enabled him to be active in learning and helpful in
my teaching. He is very smart in logical thinking. With
a quick mind and a solid knowledge foundation on maths,
he got 96 in the final examination of this course, the No.1
in his class and the only student with a mark over 90 in
the department. In solving a lot of pattern operations and
codes processing in the examination, he was the only one
who could finish all the questions while most of other students
failed.
Mr.
Joe is known for his diligence and tenacity in the department.
When he took part in the National SONY cup Electronic Design
Competition, the department allocated a lab to him and another
student for their preparing work. No matter how late I left
my office, I would find he was working in his lab. His roommates
told me that he sometimes went back to dormitory even as
late as three o'clock in the morning. I remember the Intelligent
Electromotion Scoreboard designed by Mr. Tang's team was
awarded the second prize, which was really a tough work
for them, I think. At the same year, since Mr. Joe was ranked
the first with his highest achievements in every aspect
among all the students of his grade, he was awarded the
SONY Prize offered by the SONY Co, Japan. This prize is
co-sponsored by SONY Co. and the Education Committee of
China for the Top-100 out of 100,000 students in the 11
best-known universities in Beijing. In 1999, I recommended
him to the study and develop group for the plan of 2.5Gbit/s
SDH Optical Transmission Equipment, which was part of 863
Plan of China. When he did his graduate thesis, he chose
to study the adjustment and the mapped leaking of the TU
pointer in the SONET. For his well-knit study in his thesis,
I gave the highest score to his paper, and included his
paper into the volume of the best thesis of Beijing University
of Posts and Telecommunications in 1999. From his achievements,
I believe Mr. Tang cherishes a potential ability to be explored
in his study as well as in his overall aptitude.
In
June 1999, approved by Beijing Education Committee, Mr.
Joe was awarded the title of the Honored Graduate, which
was given only to those graduates who made an extraordinary
achievement in moral, intellectual and physical education
in the four-year graduate study in the universities. Only
the best graduates (3% of all) could be awarded the prize.
At the same time, Mr. Joe won the opportunity to continue
the study for his master degree in our university, with
no need of the entrance examination, but he quitted for
the incompliance of the studying direction to his interest.
I felt regret for him, while I respected his decision. In
one of our talks before his graduation, he told me that
he would apply for Cambridge University after he had worked
for three years. I was very glad and supported him, as we
all know Cambridge University is world-famous with a high
reputation especially on Engineering Science.
As
far as I know, Mr. Mr. Joe is industrious in his study and
with his optimistic character he is very favored by his
classmates. Besides, every year he was awarded the Best
Student Cadre and the Tri-Excellent Student (the best student
for his excellence on morality, industry and physiques).
I know Mr. Mr. Joe is now carrying on his research on the
optical communication system, which is the direction of
communication development of the world in the future, with
a profound importance for research and a very vast promising
future. The MPhil/PhD degree in optical communication system
he apples for will definitely broaden his academic visions
and elevate his academy capability. I believe the academic
atmosphere of Cambridge University accumulated in hundreds
years and the celebrated elite on Engineering Science will
be sure to assist him to make new achievements in his domain.
Meanwhile, with his theoretical knowledge as a solid foundation
and three-year working experience in Hutchison Optel Telecommunication
Company and R&D experience in Nortel Networks, Canada,
Mr. Tang, I believe, is a qualified and unusual candidate
for scholarship prize of your university.
However,
to err is humane. It seems Mr. Tang is too eager for a quick
success and instant benefit, though it is the common symptom
of the young technicians of his age. I hope his future learning
will guard him against the arrogance and bring him near
to modesty.
As
we all know, a pound equals to 13 RMB. The expensive tuition
fee is the toughest difficulty for Mr. Tang. He told me
that he still lacked 10,000pounds. I do hope the young man
will never be stopped on his way to pursuit the knowledge
and the truth by the shortage of the money, and his scientific
research and studying opportunities will never be halted
by his need of the money. If he is refused for the reason
of tuition fee, not only he but also I and other staff of
my department will absolutely feel pity for him. Therefore,
I support whole-heartedly Mr.Joe's application without any
reservation.
From
all the reasons I mentioned above, I strongly recommend
Mr. Tang to Gates Cambridge Trust as a candidate. I believe
that in the near future all of us will be proud for the
choice we will make today.
Sincerely
Yours
